"This is the book that got me hooked on Michael Crichton's work. The (fictional) story is a blend of Ahmad ibn Fadlan's 10th c. journal (real historical source) with the classic Beowulf tale, written in a matter-of-fact anthropologist's narrative voice. If you're a Lovecraft fan, keep an eye out for the cheeky reference to the (fictional) Necronomicon by Abdul Alhazred. And don't forget to watch the movie!"

Michael Crichton was a writer, director, and producer, best known as the author of Jurassic Park and the creator of ER. One of the most recognizable names in literature and entertainment, Crichton sold more than 200 million copies of his books, which have been translated into 40 languages and adapted into 15 films. He died in 2008.
