A terrific read

"With a sort of grownup and more sinister “Little House on the Prairie” vibe, this engrossing read tells the tale of the feisty Miss Flora Craige, who for reasons the reader will uncover, finds herself a homesteader in 1905 in the remote regions of the province of Alberta, Canada. Tasked with surviving the desolate landscape and terrible winters for a minimum of three years to earn title to her land, Flora is a winning combination of vulnerability, and resilience, that will likely charm all but the most cynical reader. A close-up look at the harshness of the real-life world facing women in this time period, magnified incredibly by the lot of those who chose to settle the remote territories, this is a fascinating blend of pioneer history and a life-affirming study of communities in the making — whether they be those peopled by women thrown together by shared circumstances; or the entrenched fellowship baked into the lives of the settlers and farmers of the isolated regions. A terrific read, this book is recommended for readers of historical fiction, particulary those interested in the early days of the evolving Canadian Pacific Railway, and the accompanying property title exploitation it unleashed; as well as those who enjoy stories of bonding and sisterhood; or readers who delight in journeys for protagonists ulitmately seeking justice. And of course, redemption. A great big thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own."

Finding Flora

"This is an amazing story I enjoyed it thoroughly. Flora is an amazing character. She came to Canada From Scotland to homestead in 1915. This was a very hard life for a woman on her own. I would recommend this book. It was very hard to put down. Well written by a Canadian author. Great read. I have recommended this book to many of my friends."

A terrific read

"Finding Flora, by Elinor Florence, is a marvellous read. It is a very well written, historically accurate, compelling novel, set in the early 1900s in the Canadian Prairie. The heroine is Flora Craigie, a Scottish woman, fleeing an abusive husband, jumping from a moving train, struggling to survive in a very harsh world. I could not put the book down, cheering for her to survive and succeed with her female neighbours as they battle the environment and misogyny. Very informative and moving."

Flora finds herself

"An easy read that grips you from the very first line. Just enough detail to provide a vivid picture in your mind and not too much so it doesn't bog you down in details to detract from the flow of the story."

Finding Flora

"Finding Flora was an excellent read. It was a story of bravery and perseverance in an age when women were thought to be weak and unable to manage anything on their own. Sometimes I felt that the hardships she endured were too much for one person and it is incredible that she managed to somehow come out stronger than before. It is also a story of women coming together and supporting each other."

A Canadian book!

"This is a Christmas gift so it's difficult for me to give you my opinion. I'm sure the book will come back this way at a later date."

“Elinor Florence has vividly captured a time in Canadian history when life for so many people was physically very hard and rigid demarcations separated both class and gender. The struggle of her female characters to forge a life for themselves against daunting odds grabs our sympathy and doesn’t let go until the totally satisfying ending. They are women I, for one, would love to hang out with.”
MAUREEN JENNINGS, award-winning author of the Murdoch Mysteries books
Elinor Florence grew up on a Saskatchewan farm and earned degrees in English and journalism. She worked for newspapers in all four Western provinces, spent eight years writing for Reader’s Digest Canada, and even published her own award-winning community newspaper. Her first novel, Bird’s Eye View, was a national bestseller, while the second, Wildwood, was named one of Kobo’s Hundred Most Popular Canadian Books of All Time. Finding Flora, an instant #1 national bestseller and a Heather’s Pick, was inspired by her own Scottish homesteading and Indigenous ancestors. She is a member of the Métis Nation of British Columbia and makes her home in the mountain resort of Invermere.
