House of the Dragon meets From Blood and Ash in this epic, scorching dark romantasy.
A conqueror captivated…
A witch prophesied to save them all…
An unforgiving world where dragons rule Rome.
Julian Dakkia, Roman general and nephew to the emperor, has played his role as conqueror well. Yet, the moment he laid eyes on Malina, he was enthralled by the Dacian dancer. Years later, the fierce beauty stands before him, a captive on a scarred battlefield, her life in danger. He instinctively shifts into his fierce dragon form to save her, an action that may mean his head on the imperial gate.
The rules of their world dictate that he is the conqueror and she is the captured. But he and his dragon know one thing: their bond has nothing to do with the laws of mighty Rome. She belongs to them. And they belong to her.
Fierce and powerful, twenty-one-year old Malina has survived the loss of her family and she is determined to fight until her dying breath. Still, she can’t believe that the centurion who had once bestowed a secret talisman on her is the Roman general of legendary brutality…and now holds her life in his hands. Nor can she deny how her soul has always seemed to answer his. Slowly she learns that Julian is caught in his mad uncle’s machinations for domination, and helps him plot the downfall of the empire itself.
As they navigate a world where flying deathriders conquer and burn, their love will ignite a firestorm that can only end in heartbreak or death. Or both.
Firebird is an adult romantasy novel that contains dark themes, including slavery in Ancient Rome, which may be uncomfortable for some readers.
Stunning hardcover edition and entertaining story
"Book review: 4/5 ⭐️ Genre: romantasy Themes: rebellion, imperialism, dragons, fated 📖 Read if you like: Fourth Wing, House of Blight Ancient Rome, dragons and forced proximity between enemies - of course I was going to enjoy this! The setting is very loosely based on history, but the empire and its cruelty and ambition to dominate is easily recognizable as is people uniting against tyranny. The dragons are tied in as the roman conquerors descended from the gods who passed on their ancient bloodline and powers. I enjoyed the portrayal of dragons as gods, the most magnificent and mercurial of beasts as did I the advantage this could afford shifters on the battlefield. It was a concept that garnered my interest from the start. What can I say, I just really like dragons! This book was just so fun and addictive to read. The plot may have been somewhat predictable, but there was enough action and twists to keep it interesting. There is also a saucy romance between fated lovers and while some readers took issue to the slave and master relationship, Julian acted within the confines of his current society and I found he was respectful with all his household, not just Malina. The undeniable pull between the two becomes palpable in this slow burn romantasy and there are several spicy scenes. The stoic Julian is a master of hiding his own secrets and Malina is bold and hot headed. They are opposites in so many ways and yet are inevitably fated. The relationship between the two is a pillar of this story, but the corrupt Caesar and brewing rebellion amidst external threats was the focus. It brought forth political intrigue and an air of mystery to the storyline. This book sets up a world brimming on the verge of war and an evil ruler who must be usurped. It was easy to read and follow along, which is exactly what I was in the mood for. Luckily I have an ALC of book 2, so I will be jumping right in. I cannot end this review without commenting on how beautiful this sprayed edge is. Thankfully the beautiful exterior matched the entertainment of the novel within."
