Excellent blend of Sci Fi and Thriller

"In a not-so-distant future, climate change has seriously impacted the planet. Junior has been selected to leave the planet to test other areas for habitability. Henrietta plans to stay home, but it seems all the plans have already been sorted out without Junior’s knowing. As he starts investigating and asking questions it seems that not everything is as it seems. I picked up this audiobook from the library for the Canada Reads 2026 program. Someone had told me they didn’t really like it, so I was going in with lower expectations, but I actually loved it. It’s the third one I’ve read of this year’s selections and it’s my favourite so far. I don’t know whether I would call this more sci-fi or more thriller, but it toes that line quite beautifully. I thought this futuristic setting was well written and thought out, and not that far out of believability. I felt for Junior and his confusion after it seemed like his future was predetermined and he had no say in these complex decisions. As he begins to investigate what is going on, I was just increasingly invested in the story. When everything is revealed at the end, I was shocked and it was so intelligent. I honestly wanted to start it again to see if I could pick up on any of the hints earlier in the book. It’s a great sci fi read for those that don’t like the heavily immersive sci-fi that can be a little intimidating. So far, I am hoping this one wins Canada Reads and I will definitely read more by this author!"

In my TBR

"Still haven't read it. I like Reid so I can't wait to dive into this book."

Fantastic!

"This is my third Reid novel, and he consistently proves he’s an absolute genius. This one left me reeling. You really have to look deep into this one to understand what’s happening, but when the big reveal hits you it hits HARD. It’s a book that will sit with you ages after finishing. You definitely don’t have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy this one, and I think it’s an important read especially with the rise of AI. If you haven’t read any of Reid’s books, do yourself a favor and pick this one up!"

SOGOOD

"One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. You are in the perspective of the man most of the time and you get to be with him while he learns more about himself. It sounds boring but it’s insanely good."

Julia (4/5)

Slow burn, big ending.

"Slow burn, but the climax of the story kind of hits you in the face. I enjoy that point in the book when you gasp because you didn’t see it coming."

Brilliant and eerie

"Iain Reid is a master at creating an unsettling atmosphere. This book had me absolutely gripped from the very first page! I finished it in one sitting. The tension was so subtle, yet so haunting, I could not put it down until I figured out exactly what was going on. Highly recommend this if you’re looking for a unique story that’s both eerie and unnerving in a way where you can’t quite put your finger on why. I’m very excited to see the film adaptation of this one!"
