The Jazz Age is in full swing, but Casiopea Tun is too busy cleaning the floors of her wealthy grandfather’s house to listen to any fast tunes. Nevertheless, she dreams of a life far from her dusty small town in southern Mexico. A life she can call her own.
Yet this new life seems as distant as the stars, until the day she finds a curious wooden box in her grandfather’s room. She opens it—and accidentally frees the spirit of the Mayan god of death, who requests her help in recovering his throne from his treacherous brother. Failure will mean Casiopea’s demise, but success could make her dreams come true.
In the company of the strangely alluring god and armed with her wits, Casiopea begins an adventure that will take her on a cross-country odyssey from the jungles of Yucatán to the bright lights of Mexico City—and deep into the darkness of the Mayan underworld.
Praise for Gods of Jade and Shadow
“A dark, dazzling fairy tale . . . a whirlwind tour of a 1920s Mexico vivid with jazz, the memories of revolution, and gods, demons, and magic.”—NPR
“Snappy dialog, stellar worldbuilding, lyrical prose, and a slow-burn romance make this a standout. . . . Purchase where Naomi Novik, Nnedi Okorafor, and N. K. Jemisin are popular.”—Library Journal (starred review)
“A magical novel of duality, tradition, and change . . . Moreno-Garcia’s seamless blend of mythology and history provides a ripe setting for Casiopea’s stellar journey of self-discovery, which culminates in a dramatic denouement. Readers will gladly immerse themselves in Moreno-Garcia’s rich and complex tale of desperate hopes and complicated relationships.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

must read!
"I really enjoyed this book! Really great young adult read. I thought the writing was beautiful and there were many times I had to pause just to breathe and/or scream (in a good way). I did find the ending to be a bit rushed but the developing relationship between the main characters makes it worth it."
— Julia (4/5)
A girl and a god go on a road trip
"I'm a fan of Marvel's Loki as played by Tom Hiddleston, and this book was terrific, about a different god but no less angry and with some humanity. I enjoyed it -- somewhat of a fairy tale, Casiopea as a Cinderella type."
— Caryn (5/5)
Very engrossing story
"This book was fantastic. The story is set in 1920s Mexico, and features a lot of old Mayan gods and myths. I know very little about that part of the world so it felt very unique and fresh to me. Add in Moreno-Garcia’s wonderful world building and I could not put this book down. The central character is a young woman named Casiopea. She lives a rather Cinderella-like life, taking care of her arrogant grandfather and abusive cousins. But when she accidentally frees the Mayan god of death, she is roped into helping him regain his throne. It’s a risky journey, but Casiopea embraces the chance to see the world beyond her small village. But it’s a harder journey than she expected. Casiopea ends up facing a dilemma with no good solution, destined to lose in one way or another. I spent most of the time trying to figure out which way she would go, and ended up totally surprised in the end. Maybe it’s just me, but I love when a story throws me off like that."

Amazing! Amazing! Amazing!
"Here's some advice: Buy this book. Here's some more advice: Read this book. A last bit of advice: Be prepared to be blown away by this story. Casiopea has to be the most raw, daring and incredibly real character I have ever read. She was an angry, adventure-seeking, weary, courageous and witty character. I loved everything about her, from her bone-deep resentment of her family situation to her free-spirited, no shit-taking confidence. She was as about dynamic as one could get, constantly re-evaluating herself, the life she has lived, the one she is living and the one she dreams to live. Her coming-of-age story is an unforgettable one no doubt. Every other character from her awful cousin Martin, to the distant and stoic Mayan gods brought in such interesting perspectives and dynamics to the plot. They were all so incredibly well-written. Mexico in the 20s was a wild time, as I’m sure it was elsewhere in the world. I loved that we got to see how starkly different life could be in different places of the time. There was the tiny, suffocating, strict streets of the pueblo. Then there was the fun yet dangerous paths of Mexico City. We even get to the flashy, high life of America for a bit. But the best part had to be the Underworld. It just was. Trust me. It is a haunting type of beauty that really had me wanting to go there while simultaneously never, ever wanting to go there. There is a great amount of adventure to be had. It does have a quest narrative after all! The stakes are high, the challenges are messy, there is more than one Mayan god of death so you can definitely plan on some havoc coming from them! The action and intensity were perfect. The pacing was just right, speeding up when we needed to move and slowing down when we needed those sweet moments! And it’s chalked full of myth and legend, with a glossary at the back so you don’t get lost at any point in turn! Take my advice, read the book!"
