After waging two separate quests (The Lost Hero, 2010; The Son of Neptune, 2011), the Greek and Roman demigods of Riordan''s Heroes of Olympus quintet join forces. With his now-trademark zero-to-60 acceleration, the author engineers a ghostly possession to set Greeks and Romans at odds and initiates the Prophecy of the Seven, hurtling Annabeth, Percy, Piper, Leo, Hazel, Frank and Jason into a pell-mell flight on the magical trireme Argo II. They seek the titular Mark of Athena, which they hope will provide the key to defeating the vengeful Earth mother, Gaea, or at least some of her giant offspring. As the trireme crosses the country, the pace drags while the demigods sort out relationships and work to figure out both cryptic prophecy and nightmare visions. With sweethearts Annabeth and Percy once again united, much of the tension that powered earlier books is gone. Once the Argo II leaves the United States, though, the pace picks up, and the comically instructive set pieces Riordan''s so good at emerge. A Luddite god rails against what he calls the "b-book," which displaced the far superior scroll technology; Annabeth gets a crash course in the cult of Mithros far below the streets of Rome. Here, Riordan''s infectious love for his subject matter really comes through, even as he takes some real risks with his characters. A literal cliffhanger leaves eager readers hanging; next stop: Greece-and Tartarus. (glossary) (Fantasy. 10-14)-Kirkus

SO MUCH LOVE

"Rick Riordan never fails to amaze with every single book he writes! #plumreview"

Annabeth is tough

"Good book with Annabeth and her own journey. She is a tough cookie and a great match with Percy"

Respect for Annabeth

"This book is a close second to may favourite in the series, The House of Hades. Annabeth's quest, her problems, and the way she solves them had me in awe because of how much of an amazing character she is. In this book we get Annabeth as more of a focus than Percy. Her character development is amazing and the way she discovers herself and overcomes her fears is absolutely amazing. Leo is also back and as crazy as ever. To be honest, he needs his own series, even a stand alone novel. It doesn't matter as long as I get more of this little latino! Also if you haven't read this book yet get ready for the. Biggest. Cliffhanger. Ever."

Appreciation For Annabeth And Series As A Whole

"Maybe because it's my second time reading these books, I was able to enjoy this one a bit more than before. I still like how this one is mainly focused around Annabeth's personal quest. In his other books, Annabeth is still a fantastic character, but she doesn't spend a lot of time on solo quests, so this was much different, but still just as great as Riordan's other work. Annabeth is a strong, kick-butt character, and her genius mind really gets to shine through in this one. The last time I read these books, this one was my least favorite, but the second time around, I found a new appreciation for it, especially the humor - namely, Leo Valdez. This boy deserves his own book(s)."

Amazing!

"An great Heroes of Olympus book, especially exciting as in this one all the characters unite and for the first time part of the book is told from Annabeth's perspective. Great adventure and important book in the series"

OK but lost interest

"These books were not as good as the Percy Jackson series, however since it occurs in the same universe it was still worth the read. I also liked the different characters and their unique personalities. It was nice to read from Annabeth's perspective again, even if she sounded almost the exact same as in the other series except with more relationship drama. However, all of the flaws of the Percy Jackson series are accentuated in these books (the over-the-top reactions and action) that I just couldn't like it as much. Which is really too bad because I was looking forward to getting back into the fray. I stopped at this book as I was just not interested in what happens next."

Appreciation For Annabeth

"Annabeth, ever since the first book in the Percy Jackson series, has been a tough, can't-help-but-love-her type of character. She'll destroy her enemies and still find the time to admire the architecture. While this book wasn't my favorite in the series, and while I'm not enjoying these books as much as I'd hoped, it was still great to see Annabeth get the attention, respect, and admiration that she deserves. It's the first time we see her go on a quest by herself, and while she works wonderfully with other demigods, it's still nice to finally get to see Annabeth show her true strength and find out more about herself in the process. Unfortunately, Riordan doesn't build up to that point until well over 400 pages into this book, which is why I'm only giving it a three-star rating. I wanted to see more of Annabeth kicking butts and taking names, but instead, I saw more relationship drama than demigods working together to defeat Gaea. Hoping for in improvement in the next books."
