The universe has broken wide, and Lyra's friend lies dead. Desperate for answers and set on revenge, Lyra bursts into a new world in pursuit of his killer. Instead, she finds Will, just twelve years old and already a murderer himself. He's on a quest as fierce as Lyra's, and together they strike out into this sunlit otherworld.
On this journey marked by danger, Will and Lyra forge ahead. But with every step and each new horror, they move closer to the greatest threat of all—and the shattering truth of their own destiny.
In this stunning sequel to The Golden Compas, Philip Pullman continues His Dark Materials trilogy and confirms it as an undoubted and enduring classic.

"Unfortunately not a lot happened in this book. I was beyond frustrated with our MC because of the stupid decisions that she makes, but then I had to remind myself that she's 11-12 years old. If anything, this book basically sets everything up for the last book (or so I hope) in this series. So. . . boring stuff. Not sure if 3 stars is generous, but we'll see. ."

I love this series, but slowest book
"This is my least favourite book in this series, but I still think this is a great series and worth reading if you enjoy YA/fantasy and world-building"
— Melanie (4/5)
Needs more Lyra
"I found this to be more of a page-turner than the first one, but it also had less substance. I was also really disappointed with the way Lyra was just sidelined - and even spent a good deal of the story unconscious!"
— Marzipan (3/5)
Worth Reading Again
"I'm reading this again having just finished The Book of Dust. Had forgotten how great the writing is and the creation of alternate/parallel universes. Pullman writes a gripping, tension-filled story."
— Barbara W. (5/5)
Excellent
"I enjoyed this as much as an adult as I did a teen. It is well written and thought out, the detail and thought put into the book is stunning. I"
— Rebecca (5/5)
Love this series
"The second book of the series does not disappoint. Fantastic."
— Yvonne (5/5)
Not as good
"I read these books about 7 years ago and now I have listened to them again because I remembered that I enjoyed them and wanted to relive the experience. I did enjoy this second book although not as much as the first one. Will and Lyra were good characters and their adventures were interesting, however this book was much slower and I didn't feel as connected to it as I remember."
— Diana (3/5)
Can't wait to read it again
"This is definitely a book that you'll want to re-read! An excellent sequel, and I can honestly say that its enjoyable to read as an adult as well!"
— Virginia (5/5)
Subtle Knife
"Lyra is a great main character and this is an excellent sequel."
— Caroline (5/5)
Dark and twisty
"A great follow up to The Golden Compass. Even though a couple months had passed since I read the first book in the series, I was able to pick up again right where I left off and got right back into the otherworldliness of His Dark Materials. I'm often surprised by how violent this series is, considering it's supposed to be for kids. I'm intrigued by how the knife is going to play a part in the rest of the story, and can't wait to read the final instalment!"
