I Think We’ve Been Here Before is a rare gem of a book, the kind that instantly inspires you to sit up and pay attention, because something special is unfolding on the page. I don’t know what I loved most―the memorable characters, gripping premise, insightful prose, or nearly perfect ending. Suzy Krause writes with a magical touch.”

Incredibly compelling

"An incredibly compelling look at life and death and all that we can never really know, laced through with love and compassion and family and kindness, and all the things we know for sure — these things that must transcend the mystery, somehow. Strangely comforting, immediately resonant, this book touches on our deepest fears, and our innermost longings, through characters so vulnerable and authentic you can not imagine taking this journey along with anyone else. Nora, nineteen, is a confused and vulnerable Canadian teen, still reeling after a traumatic romantic dumping (by text message, nonetheless). When Nora accepts a placement in Berlin, Germany that will see her leave her rural Saskatchewan home and family (whose members are each going through their own internal traumas), her desperate attempt to begin her life again will move in directions she could not possilbly predict. Without giving the plot away, (no spoilers here), ironically, for Nora and everyone else, the world just may be at the point of ending. And not merely metaphorically, as this cast of characters are forced to examine their lives and their loves on their individual journeys, as they attempt to make peace with an upcoming cataclysmic event. A complex story that is beautifully written, the author somehow manages to weave quantum mechanics, weighty philosophical questions, a slyly humorous cat, and the life experiences and relationships of one luminous and extended family, into a story both profound, and utterly heartwarming. A terrific read, this book is highly recommended for those readers who want to lose themselves in characters who matter, — who hurt and grieve and long for more; who think about the bigger questions while doing their best; and ultimately, who find solace in each other along the way. A great big thank you to riverstreetwriting, the author, the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts provided are my own."

Five blindingly bright stars for Suzy Krause

"An utterly stunning, poignant, heartrending look at the end of the world. Not ""apocalypse"" that we're used to seeing in books, I THINK WE'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE is so much more. Suzy Krause will join the ranks of celebrated Canadian authors as her career progresses . . . her facility and playfulness with prose is so unique and so fresh -- I had moments while reading where I had to pause and read the passage out loud so I could hear it a second time. Just a gorgeous narrative through which Krause undertakes the close examination of humans and family and what we are to one another, what truly matters, and the complex yet comforting possibility of quantum entanglement. I will read it again."

A Story Unlike Any Other

"My brain is having a hard time trying to wrap itself around this novel and process it (in a good way). This is a very unique read! Often we (or I at least) can speculate on the world ending. Sometimes these hypotheticals involve talks about exploding into a great ball of fire and other times it's fuelled by reading a novel involving a post-apocalyptic universe. However, I don't know if I've ever read a book where there is a set date and the characters just have to. . . wait for it to happen. There isn't anything they can do about it. That fact alone introduces a heavy discussion on the dichotomy of fear versus surrender but I digress. This novel was very thought provoking and FILLED with philosophical and existential gems. If you want to truly THINK about life, whether it be past, current, or future. . . this is the book to pick up. I think it also is a book that really captures different emotions and the different stages where they could be felt separately or simultaneously together whether it be fear, anxiety, nostalgia, happiness, grief, contentment, etc. Even though this is a book that is excellently and incredibly written, you can't help but feel like maybe there's a part of it that you don't fully understand. Simply through the amount of depth and thought that goes into reading this book. It really is a complex story!"

A truly wonderful novel

"I longed for this novel when I wasn’t reading it, found I missed Krause’s poignant observations, the dazzling, comforting faith in humanity offered on each page, the accounts of the tiny pleasures, huge heartaches, and everything else in between that make up a life. In the end, it was everything I wanted, needed—and, in a strange way, expected, as if I, too, possessed the deep knowing this author channeled into such charming storytelling. This novel moved me, changed me, delighted me, undid me—and, most importantly, it made me unafraid. I will hand it to the people I love most, filled with the hope that they might find what I did within its pages—and the certainty that they will."
