Loved It!

"I picked this one up because of the cover, but I stayed because of the dynamics. The tension between our academic rivals, the moral questions, and the escalating excitement. First off, the academia vibes. They were elite. The high levels of competition were addicting to read, especially between Henry and Alice. Even though this was truly slowburn, and they weren't together for ages, I was shipping them by the first page. I loved their dynamic. I also loved the whole premise of this one. The question of how far is too far. Alice was the perfect vehicle to explore this, and even when she made some less-than-spectacular decisions, I was rooting for her. The way it played with morality was so fun, especially as the book progressed and everything got grayer. Id put off reading this one because I'm not a huge fan of urban fantasy/magical realism, but I ended up really liking it! I do wish Alice's invisibility powers had been explored a bit more, but that's a minor complaint. As a whole, this was a super fun read Thanks to Netgalley for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review 3 likes"

Cutthroat academics

"Whenever people speculate what kind of superpower they might like to have, invisibility is always brought up as a point of discussion. If You Could See the Sun would proffer that this is not a good choice, at least as it is depicted here. Fresh on the revelation that her parents can no longer afford her elite boarding school, she plunges into an unexpected bout of invisibility, prefaced only by an intense feeling of coldness. She can't predict it. She can't control it. But she can monetize it. With the help of her academic rival, with whom she bitterly shares the school's Top Achiever award, they create an app to uncover secrets and carry out clandestine tasks in exchange for huge sums of cash. But as the tasks become increasingly more complicated, ethically questionable, and legally fraught, Alice must decide whether her conscience is worth the price of tuition."

My new fictional CRUSH!

"If You Could See the Sun is a story of friendship and family surrounding a girl who feels invisible, then starts to feel visible only after she literally turns invisible. It's a coming-of-age story with a touch of magic. A story of the conflict between aspiration and class with a touch of heart-fluttering romance. I love the way details of culture - language, fashion, assumptions - are woven into it and glue all these different aspects of the story together and make it all feel so rich with feelings, so real. The best thing about this book is definitely the feelings! The book manages to invoke so many feelings in me. The anxiety, nervousness, frustration, anger, fear, and thrill - the words on the page conveys everything the main character feels to me so effectively and forcefully that I need to put the book down many times to take a deep breath. And then, of course, Henry Li thankfully is the reason I didn't become too overwhelmed (with all the feelings, especially my annoyance with Alice. ) He's a very comforting character, everything I ever need in a young adult love interest with his resourcefulness, calmness, and positivity. He's officially my number one fictional crush now."

Addictive paranormal contemporary

"Alice is a Chinese-American girl who whose family returned to China after several years in the US. She is the only scholarship student at her elite private international school in Beijing. Surrounded by her super rich classmates, Alice has always felt invisible and pours her energy into academic achievement. Her scholarship is only partial, and her struggling parents have let her know that they don’t have enough money for her to attend beyond the current semester. Shortly after her parents drop this bomb, Alice finds that she can become intermittently and unpredictably invisible. With the help of her academic rival, Henry, who creates the app ""Beijing Ghost"", she monetizes this unusual ability by performing tasks and finding out secrets. The story is fast-paced and tense, exploring themes such as economic inequality, racism, isolation and belonging. Alice is a flawed, brilliant but clueless, ambitious but relatable character and, as the stakes intensify with each task, has to make some difficult decisions about how far she will go for tuition money. It is satisfying to watch Alice find her moral center and learn to speak up for herself. If You Could See the Sun is a highly addictive, fascinating, paranormal contemporary with an exquisitely executed slow-burn rivals to lovers romance, excellent writing and a lot of depth.
