Iron Dawn is a magisterial account of one the most important battles in US naval history. It is also a wonderfully absorbing story about human beings in all their struggles both great and small.  Richard Snow has struck gold—or better yet, iron.”

A Lively Account of the Battle of the Ironclads

"I have read several books on the American Civil War and a number of them discuss, to varying degrees, the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimack. However, none of those writings are as detailed as the story recounted in this excellent book. In the case of each ship, the author discusses what led to the development of the ironclads, the individuals involved and the crews. The battle itself is described in gripping detail as well as its aftermath. Each ship’s ultimate demise is also well recounted. The effect that this battle has had on subsequent naval warfare is also well presented. I found this to be an excellent read written in a prose that is clear, lively, scholarly, accessible and quite captivating. The book should be of interest to American Civil War enthusiasts, as well as to those with a penchant for the history of naval warfare."
