book about mental health

"tw: this book contains themes of anxiety, suicide, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders. . high school freshman craig gilner is facing an unbearable amount of pressure from wanting to succeed at all the things that make a ""successful"" life. one night, he cracks and comes close to killing himself but instead, decides to check into a psychiatric hospital where he tackles his anxiety. . i think that this book offers a realistic view on mental illness in that it doesn't shy away from the possibility of its scarier outcomes, while still somehow keeping it light with craig's teenage boyish-ness. the author himself spent a couple of days in a psychiatric hospital, and began to write this book some days after he left. i was devastated to learn that he'd committed suicide, but there is something in the foreword that i wholly agree with: this book is ""an invaluable lifeline"" for those that may be struggling. i like that it didn't send the message that mental health has a one-fix solution, because it is constant work. it didn't end with craig being cured, but rather he overcame his episode using positive coping mechanisms and making difficult but healthy decisions in his life. by the end, i'm not entirely confident in craig's footing but i'm hopeful, and sometimes that's the best thing to be."

This book felt like a hug

"This book literally saved my life as a young teen. I recently wanted to revisit it as an adult, and while some of the language is likely not what would be used today, it did bring me the same comfort and support I felt all those years ago."

So lovely

"Was such an easy read; I love Ned Vizzini's simple yet funny writing style. The story was incredibly realistic and made me feel much less alone (which was exactly vizzini's intent!!) Absolutely recommend to people feeling alone with their problems as well as people wanting to inform themselves about others' experiences with mental health :)"
