“Ms. Yoshimoto’s writing is lucid, earnest and disarming . . . [It] seizes hold of the reader’s sympathy and refuses to let go.” —Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“Banana Yoshimoto is a master storyteller. . . . The sensuality is subtle, masked, and extraordinarily powerful. The language is deceptively simple.” —Chicago Tribune

“Yoshimoto shouldn’t be shy about basking in her celebrity. Her achievements are already legend.”—The Boston Globe

Lost in translation

"Not in love with the translation, and how it feels like as though even the translator did not understand what was being said. I’m envious of Japanese readers who can read the art produced by Banana Yoshimoto without witnessing the ‘lost in translation’ phenomenon. I’m sure the original writing is lovely, and that the translator did their best, it just didn’t speak to me which is a shame, I’d been waiting for a year to pick this book up :("

Outstanding Read!

"Recommending this book comes as second nature if you are a first time or returning reader to this novel. While the dialogue may occasionally be difficult to follow, this, in no way, takes away from this magical read where the contrast between light and dark paths in life are portrayed by a girl who lost it all yet still found love. Would give 7/5 if I could!"

"Such an amazing short read! This book helped me get out of my long-time reading stump."

Naja (5/5)

existentially beautiful

"One of my favourite books, now that I have finished reading it. Loneliness, waves of sadness, loss, and the unfairness of life. This book had it all. It had a bit of an existential theme and it made me really happy that the protagonist found something they enjoyed. When you find something and someone you enjoy, it helps you cope with the misery in life. This book was overall a very great read. It was a short read. Yoshimoto also writes beautifully and I was shocked that this was her English-language debut book. It was amazingly written and I enjoyed the beauty of the mundane. Very Murakami-esque, and I love Murakami. If you like Murakami, you’ll definitely like this book. It was amazing and helped me with my sad night."

Couldn't put it down

"Yoshimoto's writing paints such a vivid mental picture. There's subtle emotion in her words that plunge you into all the emotions of her stories. Days after reading, I'm still reflecting back on this book, and I think I will for a long time."

Flawless

"I absolutely adore this book (novel? Anthology?). It's actually two stories in one short little book, and while they aren't necessarily linked by characters they are linked by a certain sort of magic and a deep sense of heart. I'm not ashamed to say I cried many times reading these two beautiful stories. Themes like family, friendship, love, loss, and the beauty of everyday life are prominent. This book has everything I look for in a great read - amazing characters, intriguing stories, and emotion that runs very, very deep."
