Reviews

A unique piece of literature

"Less by Andrew Sean Greer is a loving reflection on life - which may seem like an odd description given its plot. Arthur Less, once a promising writer now turned a mediocre novelist, runs away from his ex-boyfriend’s wedding invitation in the most exorbitant way possible: by patching together a laundry list of travel plans comprising of invitations, lecturing jobs, travel article, and anything else that will get him away from the wedding. As Less travels around the world, the narrator gives us incremental anecdotes about how Less became Less. The stories of his wild youth and of his fear of everything; the stories of being surrounded with geniuses despite his own mediocrity; and the story of him and his lover, Freddy. The narrator is forgiving, honest, and incredibly funny. Less is a book that gives you back the warm perspective on life. Greer’s writing is a unique blend of artistic and witty. The way Greer paints the picture of how people fall in love, regret something that happened decades ago, and reflect fondly on old acquaintances will make you nostalgic about a time you’ve never lived."

Less ……appropriate and to the point

"This book will be open for discussion at my next book club meeting. Personally, I’m not enthusiastic. Although the subject is interesting, the writer takes us on different avenues simultaneously. Back and forth in his youth and present life. Can be confusing. Again, my personal preference here and not a judgment on the quality of the text."

A great read!

Less:the person, the relationship, the recovery. We’ll done

"Even if the lifestyle isn’t our own, we all have experienced the fall and recovery experienced by Less. So many topics are covered in this Less than usual sized novel. I found that Less is much more than less."

Less is not More

"This follows the classic midlife crisis of the 50 year old who's old lover is getting married to another man, who's getting older, and who has not really left a mark on the world. He decides to patch together a round the world trip on someone else's dime. It goes from one cringy situation to the next. If it wasn't the book club choice of our group I would have stopped reading."

LESS

"I am enjoying the flowing descriptions, the movement between land and people but not the timing . . . bit slow which allows me to wander."

Confusing Pulitzer Win

"This book did not keep my attention for some reason. It took me 2 tries to actually get into it, and then when I finally made the decision to complete it, I felt like it was a beach read at best. It was completely unrealistic and unrelatable. A very confusing Pulitzer win."
