Love it!

"I will recommend this book to everyone! Such a fun and emotional read."

Daniela A. (5/5)

Clever, darkly comedic, and deeply touching!⁣

"𝐌𝐀𝐃 𝐌𝐀𝐁𝐄𝐋 is a memorable, mischievous tale that draws readers into the life of Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick, an eighty-one-year-old woman whose quiet routine is suddenly turned upside down when her next-door neighbour is found dead, her daily visits with her lifelong best friend are constantly interrupted by an insistent, percocious seven-year-old girl from across the street, and a tragic past she’s long tried to bury begins to resurface. ⁣ ⁣ The prose is tight and witty. The characters are quirky, sharp, and utterly endearing. And the story weaves together life, loss, family, drama, and unexpected friendship into a compelling narrative filled with both humour and heart. ⁣ ⁣ For years, Sally Hepworth’s books have topped my must-read list, and just when I thought I couldn’t love her work any more, she proved me wrong yet again. 𝐌𝐀𝐃 𝐌𝐀𝐁𝐄𝐋 is mystery writing at its finest, and I absolutely loved it. ⁣"

Delightful read

"Mad Mable is a delightful yet suspensful read that had me laughing out loud and unable to put the book down. You can't help but love Mable. I laughed with her, laughed at her, cried with her but mostly admired her resislience. Mable has lived her life under a cloud of a cruel legend: after all she is known as Mad Mable and was the youngest Australian ever charged with murder. Her story is told from Then and Now and both of those Mables are endearing. Sally Hepworth is a master of drawing the reader in with secrets, lies and suspenseful twists and turns alongside a tidal wave of emotions . This is my favourite Sally Hepworth to date. Mad Mable is one of those books that when you finish the last page you know you will truly miss the characters and wonder what in heavens name can I read after this."

There are no words to express my feelings!

"In the words of Mabel herself, “Mother of God!” There aren't words to express how this book made me feel. It consumed me from its first pages. With each period of her life Mabel was surrounded by alarming incidents that left me reeling and then anxiously reading to find out “What happened?!” And oh my goodness every step of the way was a new adventure laced sometimes with humor and other times tragedy, all of it brought to life by characters that were craftily created. They either kept me guessing or made me laugh while helping to ease the tension of Mabel’s story. I loved that I was never able to find solid footing because this story kept shifting in ways I never saw coming. This book was nothing as I expected. I wish I could reread it again for the first time."

Emotional character study with depth and twists

"Book rating: 5⭐️ Genre: mystery thriller Themes: truth, bias, character study, domestic trauma, found family 📖 Read if you like: My Grandmother Sends Her Regrets and Apologies, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared, This was better than even I could have imagined. First off Elsie is not your sweet old granny baking and welcoming everyone into her home. She is crochetedly 81-year old with a potty mouth that is hilariously outspoken and grouchy. She has a best friend Daphne who is similarly delightful with her loud outfits and vulgar conversations that left me full of mirth. They are who I want to be when I grow up. Mad Mabel is a domestic thriller of a young girl who was bullied by practically everyone in her life. Vilified by a father who sought control and conformity from an early age, Mabel is friendless and whispered about in plain sight. When people around her start ending up dead, the name gets a new meaning. In the end, there is a big secret that she is keeping, one that lands her as the youngest person in Australia to ever meet convicted of murder. The story unfolds in two parts as Mabel who now goes as Elsie finds her elderly neighbour dead only to then be ridiculously accused of his murder. As it bounces between the past and present, the story will explore human behaviour and sociopathic manipulation within families. She has had a difficult life surrounded by difficult people. Those that should have loved and protected her didn’t, and those that did were in a constant battle. The journey shows how the sweet and lonely girl turns into the sharp and biting geriatric, and of course who she murders (with good reason!). I could not put this book down. It had everything you could want and then some with some good twists added in. It was curious, nosy and full of chatter, charm and sass. I very much enjoyed the passages that criticized the patriarchy and extolled the power of female friendships, along with the capacity for justice and redemption. It was smart, conversational and beautifully written interlacing dark humour, insight and heart. I was pulled into the orbit of Mabel Elsie Waller and by the end she had my heart. Thank you to Macmillan Audio and St. Martin’s Press for an ALC and eARC. Hannah Fredericksen and Jenny Seedsman did a marvelous job of giving tender and naive Mabel, and sharp and stalwart Elsie life. They each embodied the character at different stages of life and collected experiences. Having read the book and listened to the audiobook (because, yes I did really enjoy it that much) I have to say that the audiobook really pulled at my emotions and created a vivid ensemble. I did find Persephone’s voice really annoying and Adeem’s a little stereotypical, but then again that fit with Elsie’s opinion with her. Other than that it was easy listening."

A fabulous read!

"I loved this book! It had just the right amount of humour and tragedy, with some suspense and a neat twist at the end. The characters were wonderful and I especially loved the relationship between Elsie and Persephone. I thought the dual timelines using the idea of a podcast interview really worked well. Note that this book read a little less like a thriller than the author’s previous works and more like a book by Fredrik Backman, whom I love. Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the digital advance reading copy. 5/5 big stars!"

5 stars!!!

"Told in dual time frames - current day and back in Mabel's youth - this was an engaging mystery that Hepworth skillfully reveals to her readers, leaving us on tenterhooks with good twists and delightful teases. I listened to the audiobook which was narrated by the talented duo of Hanna Fredericksen and Jenny Seedsman, I found myself sneaking in listening time throughout my day as I was pulled further and further into the past and present of 'Mad Mabel'. Is she 'mad' or simply misunderstood? But what surprised me the most about this book was how connected I felt to curmudgeonly Mabel, a character who will stay with me for a very long time. Think of her as Ove (the grumpy main character from A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman) . . . except she may have a dark and deadly past. She lives in a small neighbourhood with an eclectic and nosey bunch who believe they know everything about everyone . . . or so they think! With a unique and memorable main character in Mabel who is equally sassy, sarcastic and smart-assy, great tension-building and a wonderful (and unexpected) human element that I adored (keep the Kleenex handy), this is my favourite Sally Hepworth novel to date!"

A fun and terrific read

"Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick — aka “Mad Mabel” — is eighty-one years old. A tough-talking (tender-hearted?) and deeply humorous octogenarian, six-feet tall with broad shoulders, Mabel puts up with nothing from any-one, least of all the mousy neighborhood child Persephone, or her much-lamented nemesis, the ninety-three year old Ishaan and his demonic Chihuahua, Nugget. Arm in arm with her “bosom buddy”, Daphne, Mabel’s intent is to live out her days quietly in the relative obscurity of her Australian subdivision hideaway. A sudden death, and life in Melbourne will change for all, as the facade of Mabel in her harmless dotage begins to crack, exposing the reader to clues that all is not what it seems with our trusty (rusty?) heroine and her razor-sharp tongue. As clues to Mabel’s childhood and former life (her claim to fame, if you could call it that) mount, YouTube videographers Adeem and Libby enter the scene, iPhone camera at the ready. Is Mable a long-ago serial killer? A current-day murderer? An elderly lady with horrific secrets to share? With more than one trick up her sleeve, the author does a fabulous job teasing out Mabel’s final mysteries, tantalizing piece by piece unfolding as we follow the dual puzzles of her story, — her social-media captured childhood and distant past, along with her current-day challenges and experiences. A fun and terrific read, featuring a feisty, prickly heroine one cannot help but warm to, this is a fast and engaging ride, difficult to put down once the clues start popping. A great big thank you to Netgalley, the author, and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own. ** four and a half shiny stars"

"A must-purchase for most collections. Not only will Hepworth’s many fans be clamoring for this, but it’s sure to grow her reader base." --Library Journal, starred review

"Hepworth balances heartbreak with Elsie’s delicious snark and strong suspense, but readers will be hard-pressed to resist feeling something here as allies emerge to defeat Elsie’s resigned loneliness. Arguably Hepworth’s best, this is a must-read for fans of Helene Tursten’s Elderly Lady series and Christopher Bollen’s Havoc (2024). " --Booklist, starred review
