“Miraculous and thrilling . . . A few pages in and I was determined to read every word Jess Kidd has ever written. “ —DIANE SETTERFIELD, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Thirteenth Tale and Once Upon a River

"A perfect mix of hilarity, the macabre, and a touch of romance, THINGS IN JARS is ridiculously entertaining, all as it sneaks up and makes you feel things. Would that more books had such daring. The language is perfection. Simply: Jess Kidd is so good it isn't fair." —ERIKA SWYLER, bestselling author of The Book of Speculation and Light from Other Stars

"Things in Jars is an extraordinary tale full of dark magic, wicked humour, and hugely entertaining characters all of whom are beautifully drawn. An absolute treat!." —RUTH HOGAN, author of The Keeper of Lost Things

"Kidd (Mr. Flood's Last Resort, 2018, etc.) is an expert at setting a supernatural mood perfect for ghosts and merrows, but her human villains make them seem mundane by comparison. With so much detail and so many clever, Dickensian characters, readers might petition Kidd to give Bridie her own series. Creepy, violent, and propulsive; a standout gothic mystery." —KIRKUS REVIEWS (starred)

"Kidd has created a captivating cast of characters and delivers a richly woven tapestry of fantasy, folklore, and history. The atmosphere is thick with myriad unpleasant smells on offer, and readers may find themselves wrinkling their noses, but they will keep turning the pages. Recommend to fans of Ruth Hogan’s The Keeper of Lost Things (2017) and Sarah Perry’s The Essex Serpent (2017)." BOOKLIST (starred)

"Kidd has fashioned enjoyable, indelible characters and a plot that keeps readers guessing, smiling and maybe even flinching." —MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE

"An enchanting mix of fact and fairytale for those looking for an out of the ordinary mystery." —HUFFINGTON POST

"Jess Kidd’s stories are so magical, she should be a genre all to herself … Things in Jars is exquisite. Perfect storytelling.” —JOANNA CANNON, author of The Trouble with Goats and Sheep

"This unusual Victorian detective tale is hugely satisfying and beautifully written . . . Kidd gives the world what is instantly one of fiction's great spectral double acts." —THE TIMES (UK)

“This pacy piece of Victorian crime fiction delivers chills galore … done with panache … Her imagination runs wild, in tightly controlled prose. Her concision makes the book feel like a high-pressure jar.” —THE GUARDIAN

"Thrilling, mysterious, twisted but more than anything, beautifully written and filled to bursting point with heart." —GRAHAM NORTONNew York Times bestselling author of Holding

“The murky grotesqueries of Victorian London. The misfits, miscreants and monsters. The tenderness found in the most unexpected of places. I savoured every page of Things in Jars.” —CLAIRE MCGLASSON, author of The Rapture

Things in Jars drew me in from the first sentence and held me, transfixed. Utterly beguiling and original, Jess Kidd writes so beautifully that every sentence was a delight. This novel deserves to soar.” —HOLLY CAVE, author of The Memory Chamber

"A twisting, precis-defying plot . . . Arresting, funny and well-written." —SUNDAY TIMES

"A masterclass in storytelling. One of those books that truly does make you laugh out loud, that shakes and remakes what you think a story can be. It's rare to find a book so satisfying." —KIRAN MILLWOOD HARGRAVE, author of The Mercies

Cozy Murder Mystery

"This was such a cozy story, it was easy to read and I was able to fully envision the world and characters. I will say that it was a tad predictable as I had figured out the murderer fairly early on in the book. However, I think that the concept was great and if you are looking for a cute cozy murder that doesn't turn to gore and shock factors this is the book for you. It is one of my favourite reads this year!"

An entertaining and easy historical mystery

"This is the first book in what is to be a new series (Nora Breen Investigates) featuring a former nun and it is set in 1954 England. It felt a little deeper than a cozy mystery but still had that comfortable and easy feel and I really enjoyed it. It is character driven and the author certainly created a cast of interesting ones. I also loved the relationship between Nora, (the nun) and Rideout (the cop). This is quite different from the other three books from this author that I have read and thoroughly enjoyed; there is just something about Kidd’s writing appeals to me. I look forward to more. 4. 25/5"

I did not like the title I have the paperback from 1982, titled Halloween Party. they are pretty much the same thing. I found the title misleading, Halloween party is a better title.

"the text was well written, and seemed more modern than the original story. the print was easy to read."

Delightful read

"Murder at Gull's Nest is a delightful mystery with eccentric characters that keep you guessing from the first to the last page. Gull's Nest is a boarding house for what appears to be mainly misfits and one of their own goes missing followed by a death in house. Nora is a friend of the missing woman so she leaves the nunhood and heads to the small costal town to find out what ever happened. Can she solve the mystery. Nora is a delight and for the most part all of them trust her and will confide in her but Nora just knows there is more to the story than anyone is saying The detective on the case realizes that Nora is further ahead then the police and he reluctantly listens to her. Its a fun and complicated relationship . Twists and turns with quite a few red herrings keep the pages turning. I certainly hope we see Nora and the detective again soon."

A fantastic character-driven cozy mystery

"""𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧; 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬, 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞 𝐨𝐛𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞? [. . . ] 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐭, 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐞𝐥𝐬𝐞'𝐬?"" Murder at Gulls Nest is an intriguing start to this new series! When former nun Nora arrives at seaside boarding house Gulls Nest in search of her missing friend, she never expected her inquiries to lead to murder. Jess Kidd shows exceptional skill in creating interesting characters who leap off the page; having a middle aged former nun who is re-discovering the world around her, while being steadfast in her convictions, makes for a complex character. The residents of Gulls Nest are equally well developed, quirky, realistic, and suspicious enough to be suspects in the strange happenings at the boarding house. Kidd's writing is almost poetic in ways with lots of unique vocabulary, while also feeling Christie-like in cadence and tone, along with its sleepy village, séance, local victor, and reflections on postwar life. The teamup between Nora and Inspector Rideout was easy to love, with Nora's amateur skills put to good use as bodies, red herrings and the puzzles pile up. This isn't a fast-paced story, but solidly focuses on character development, the 1950s England atmosphere, and the mystery itself. The ending did feel a bit rushed; I felt it could've been developed a bit more, but it still was a satisfying conclusion to an excellent mystery. Murder At Gulls Nest is a fantastic addition to the mystery genre; I am very much looking forward to the next in the series."
