"Ninth House is the best fantasy novel I’ve read in years, because it’s about real people. Bardugo’s imaginative reach is brilliant, and this story—full of shocks and twists—is impossible to put down." - Stephen King

"Ninth House is one of the best fantasy novels I’ve read in years. This book is brilliant, funny, raw and utterly magnificent — it's a portal to a world you’ll never want to leave." - Lev Grossman, New York Times bestselling author of The Magicians

"Ninth House is the best thing I’ve read in a long time. There’s so much magic here that you'll begin to feel it seeping into the room around you as you read, and characters so real you ’ll practically hear their voices in your ear. Leigh Bardugo has written a book so delicious, so twisty, and so immersive I wouldn’t blame you for taking the day off to finish it." - Kelly Link, author of Magic for Beginners and Get in Trouble.

"Leigh Bardugo's Ninth House rocked my world. I could not get enough of sinewy, ghost-haunted Alex Stern, a heroine for the ages. With a bruised heart and bleeding knuckles, she risks death and damnation — again and again — for the people she cares about. I was cheering her on the whole way: from the first brilliant sentence of this book to the last. More, please, Ms. Bardugo." - Joe Hill, New York Times bestselling author of NOS4A2

"In this mesmerizing novel, Leigh Bardugo introduces us to Alex, a high-school dropout who gets a free ride to Yale because of a unique talent. Bardugo's New Haven is plausible and frightening, and I was one rapt reader." - Charlaine Harris, bestselling author of the True Blood series

"With an aura of both enchantment and authenticity, Bardugo's compulsively readable novel leaves a portal ajar for equally dazzling sequels." - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Atmospheric...Part mystery, part story of a young woman finding purpose in a dark world." - Booklist (starred review)

"Genuinely terrific...The worldbuilding is rock solid, the plot is propulsive, and readers will be clamoring for a sequel as soon as they read the last page." - Library Journal (starred review)

"Excellent...Bardugo gives [her protagonist] a thoroughly engaging mix of rough edge, courage and cynicism." - Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Instantly gripping...Creepy and thrilling...The world of this book is so consistent and enveloping that pages seem to rush by." - BookPage (starred review)

“Simultaneously elegant and grotesque, eerie and earthbound...Wry, uncanny, original and, above all, an engrossing, unnerving thriller.” - The Washington Post

while the story is

"while the story is rich with amazing components, i found that the books were so driven by the plot that there wasn't enough time to allow the characters to sit with their feelings and develop. alex's life is rife with trauma and inequity, but it wasn't explored in a way that fully engaged me with her story. i think that bardugo did a much better job at exploring darlington's past and personality, as it was handled with a sense of attachment that alex's wasn't. ergo my soft spot for the gentleman of lethe."

Slow start but good finish!

"This book started a little slow and was confusing at first, but when it picked up, it was worth it! Some twists were predictable, but effective nonetheless. Check your trigger warnings though as there is reference to drug use, gaslighting and sexual assault, and murder."

Dark and mysterious

"Very dark story, but very well written, we obtain infos bit by bit on the character s past until everything falls together at the end!"

Epic read

"LOVED this book. Listened to the audiobook first and had to buy a hard copy to read it right after."

Ate it up on a platter

"Oh my god. Leigh Bardugo never misses does she? I was a little put off at first because I was so confused with the words, but i kept going because I know my queen always explains things and boy did she ever. I am so in love with both Alex and Darlington. Alex is the most girlboss slay queen to ever girlboss. Darlington? Literally so hot, the arrogance, the stance, the emotion :u1F90C|type_4:. I also was not expecting some of the stuff that I read from Ms. Bardugo😼, but I was not complaining nor was I disappointed 😆✋🏽 Like the whole Manuscript party? and after the Manuscript party?🤤 I can't wait to sell my soul for Hellbent, I am so fucking excited"

A perfect dark academia !

"This book was so good ! My 1st dark academia book and I wasn't disappointed! You have POC and LGBTQ+ representations YES please 👏🏽👏🏽 Also the magic system was so fascinating and the atmosphere this book give it was just thrilling. Secret societies, magic and ghosts give me book 2 ! Check trigger warnings!"

I have mixed feelings

"I have mixed feelings about this book. I thought it would be different than it was. Are the characters likeable? Yes and no. I mean Alex is morally grey but so are the rest of them and I could feel for her with everyone looking down their noses at her. But the plot was a bit too convoluted for me. There was too much time spent on building up the world of the secret societies and not enough on the actual story. I guess it needed to be done so hopefully the rest of the series goes flows better. I did enjoy the magic and rituals and even Darlington."

100% Worth the Slow Burn

"Despite the fascinating occult ivy league mystery premise, this book ended up being pretty slow for the first half. The author spends much time world building while the plot plods along. And to make things worse, I had to get through a little over 1/3 of the book before I even started caring for/liking the characters. The main character screamed edge lord and the secondary MC came across as a (handsome) pretentious dick. Not good. But by the end? SIMPING SO HARD. Darlington is most definitely my darling and I will need much, much more of him in the coming book."

Bardugo at her Best!

"As a longtime fan of Leigh Bardugo's YA Grishaverse books, I was slightly apprehensive when I first heard she'd be transitioning from epic to urban fantasy for her latest release. Long story short, I should have never doubted her and was really impressed with the first book in this new series. _x000D_ _x000D_ Ninth House is a witty and deliciously dark read combining elements of fantasy, mystery and dark academia that will really keep you on your toes. The magic system is intriguing and I was completely enraptured by the detailed imagery of campus life at Yale, as well as the secret societies lying beneath its surface. You can really see how the author has matured in her writing style and the characters she has created here. The only thing that could have made this book that much better for me is if it contained a glossary (as I made many vocabulary related annotations in my copy). _x000D_ _x000D_ Overall, I can't wait for Book two because I need answers ASAP!_x000D_ _x000D_ Please note: this book deals with some very adult themes and potentially triggering subject matter so if you are interested in reading I highly recommend doing your research first."
