A Stunning, Raw Novel

Not only is Johnson's book exceptionally well written but I put it up at the levels of Christy by Catherine Marshall or even To Kill a Mockingbird. And, I'm not exaggerating. This is a blockbuster book that I give 5 stars because it kept me 100% engaged. I was unable to put it down. This is Appalachian writing at its very finest. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

-John

Gripping Character Development with a Powerful Voice

This novel provided a reading experience that was both entertaining and introspective for me. It is one of those books that has a visual voice playing out in your mind throughout the read. It addresses racism in Southern Appalachia face-on as the narrative develops. The characters are carefully built up and feel like people I have always known even though I have never met them. I was left in awe after the ending, cloaked in mystery, was finally revealed.

-Kyle

The Real and the Imagined, Carefully Crafted

Written with regional perfect-pitch narrative, humor, suspense, and heart, this book is a nugget of Appalachian life you won't want to miss.

-Marcia

A Mystery and an Honest Telling of Family Relationships and Southern Culture

The mystery at the heart of the story captivates the reader, but it is the honest portrayal of the Appalachian people, and one family in particular, that makes this book special. As a resident of the area, but not a native, I felt the characters jumped off the page through their natural dialogue that seems to have been recorded.

-Cheryl

Many Secrets, Then and Now

Stanford Johnson writes a mystery novel filled with Appalachian folklore, Southern history, and colloquial speech. It's riveting from the very first page.
