A document of persecuted love—perfect.—The Independent

About the pursuit of love, and true happiness…It has characters who laugh, and who laugh without scorn or illusion…very recognizably Highsmith, full of tremor and of threat and of her peculiar genius for anxiety.—The Sunday Times

Viscerally romantic.—Margaret Talbot, The New Yorker

therese & love

"the most beautiful queer text i've ever read. it's so visceral, and from therese's perspective, the writing allows you not only to feel her isolation and loneliness, but also fall in love with a woman you know little about — it is not about the knowledge you have on her, almost rather the knowledge that you don't. the yearning and hope for more is what keeps therese going, culminating in a beautiful relationship where love and comfort is able to guide her out of a mundane, isolated life."

Borring and pointless

"I wanted to read this book because the movie got a lot of attention and books are almost always better than the movie. I was SO disappointed in this book. The way it was written was weird didn't flow well, catch my attention or make me want to know what was going to happen. I felt nothing for any of the characters at all it was just a weird book with no real point at all. I have no idea why they would make a movie about it as it was not a good book. I pushed through to the end because it was short and I kept hoping it would get better. It did not get better and I would NOT recommend it to anyone."

LoveToRead (1/5)

Brilliant!

"I loved this book, it's become one of my favourites! For anyone interested in gay rights this will make you cry with happiness for how far we've come and with despair because things were so bad for so long. I thought this was a really honest and frank representation of coming of age and the level of blind infatuation that goes hand in hand with first love."
