“Accidental pregnancy is a love-it-or-hate-it construct for most romance fans, which could leave Cara Bastone’s friends-to-lovers entry in a tough position. But for those willing to jive with that particular plot twist—and trust me, it’s worth it—Ready or Not is an absolutely buoyant read. Vivacious and funny, Bastone’s first-person perspective through protagonist Eve traces the tricky threads of single parenthood, long-term friendship, infertility, grief, and (yes) sex with skill.”Elle

“I’ve never read a contemporary romance novel quite like this one. This friends-to-lovers trope centers on a surprise pregnancy that’s filled with heartfelt dialogue, unexpected love and a slow burn. It’s incredible and I found myself not wanting to put it down. This story is endearing, life-affirming, and left me feeling buoyed and hopeful.”New York Post, “The 15 Best Books We Read in February”

“Sure, this is a love story. But it’s also about all the ways love shows up. . . . And at the end of the day, that’s the ideal family, right? Never perfect but always trying.”—NPR

“This pitch-perfect rom-com . . . could be the guidebook on how to successfully execute the ‘friends-to-lovers’ trope. Bastone carefully captures the slow-burning magic of seeing someone familiar in a new light, and Shep is so wonderful he deserves a place in the Book Boyfriend Hall of Fame.”The Washington Post

Ready or Not is the very definition of the perfect slow burn, friends-to-lovers romance. Cara Bastone’s voice is wholly unique and sparkles with effervescence and joy. I savored every page.”—KJ Dell’Antonia, New York Times bestselling author of The Chicken Sisters

“An absolute treasure of a book! Cara Bastone gives readers a gift, and pays humanity a compliment, with this warmly witty, profoundly tender story of a love that makes the world bigger and better.”—Joanna Lowell, author of Artfully Yours

“A wholehearted meditation on all kinds of love, this novel is pure joy.”—Annabel Monaghan, nationally bestselling author of Same Time Next Summer

“With loads of humor, lovable characters, and a first kiss that will leave you flushed and breathless, Ready or Not is a delightfully romantic story that celebrates modern love and the excitement of the unexpected. Readers will adore Cara Bastone’s joyful, swoony novel!”—Amy Poeppel, author of The Sweet Spot

“This is a gratifyingly modern take on the accidental pregnancy trope that acknowledges a family can come in many different configurations.”Publishers Weekly

“Funny and touching; Eve’s snappy voice and poignant vulnerability are a good match for the subject matter.”Kirkus Reviews

“In this contemporary rom-com, the story jumps right into the action, and even readers who don’t like the surprise-pregnancy trope will find themselves glued to the page for more of Eve’s snark and sense of humor.”—Library Journal

A Great Read!

"Such an easy read. Loved the story and characters."

Caitlin (5/5)

A cast of likable characters!

"I loved this sweet romantic comedy. It had some great humour and just the right amount of spice for me (more story than spice - but still spicy where appropriate). What I really enjoyed and found a refreshing change was the cast of likable characters, albeit human and with flaws. As a mother of three, I also enjoyed the memories the story triggered as the main character's pregnancy progressed. I had trouble putting this one down. Thank you to NetGalley for the digital advance reading copy. 4. 5/5 stars!"

Mpcacher (5/5)

Great spring read!

"Such a sweet and lovely story. I’m one of those rare people who love an accidental pregnancy but I really think even if you’re not usually into that you would still enjoy this story. Really well done! And the cover is gorgeous."

Heartwarming Novel

"Thank you to Random House Publishing Group for the complimentary ARC in exchange for my honest review. _x000D_ _x000D_ Wow I absolutely loved this book. It made me happy and sad and made me laugh and cry. It was such a great story of an untraditional road to pregnancy and family and that even if something isn't perfect doesn't mean it can't be beautiful. I sobbed the last few chapters. Such a lovely and heartfelt book!"

Skeptical at first but a good story in the end

"Where to start? I read the book description and was very skeptical as to whether or not I would like this story. Felt very familiar and not in a way that was inspiring me to dig in. But from the very first page, I was rooting for Eve to figure things out and have her HEA. This was a well written book and the main character was both likeable and real, because there were moments when I also wanted to smack her. The secondary characters were well developed, particularly Shep, Willa and the baby daddy, but I kind of wanted to have her brothers around a bit more because the time she spends with them is so genuine and fun. _x000D_ _x000D_ The book is a bit romance but a lot more Eve figuring out how to be a mom and what it means to bring a new life into the world. The romance was secondary to all of that. And I was overjoyed when Nurse Louise (I think) shows up in the key moments to help guide her. _x000D_ _x000D_ Yes, there were some passages that felt a bit preachy about the wonder that is motherhood and adulting, but all in all, they were minor. And if all I can find to nit pick about is a few passages here and there where Eve gets into her head about being a good person, then so be it. Ok. And also how she avoided a few big decisions like her job and deciding what to do about Ethan-Edie. _x000D_ _x000D_ I have never read any Bastone books before, so not sure whether this lives up to the previous ones. I read a few other reviews, and I think that it's a bit of a deviation in that it is less about the romance than some of her other books. So, more of a story of growth and maturing with a smattering of romance to help us romantics through."

Cara Bastone is a full-time writer who lives and writes in Brooklyn with her husband, sons, and an almost-goldendoodle. Her goal with her work is to find the swoon in ordinary love stories. She’s been a fan of the romance genre since she found a grocery bag filled with her grandmother’s old Harlequin Romances when she was in high school. She’s a fangirl for pretzel sticks, long walks through Prospect Park, and love stories featuring men who aren’t hobbled by their own masculinity.
