Fun romance about working through the past

"Kasie West has a way of writing teenage angst and romance that just works. This was no exception. The characters are well developed and the way that they both get stuck in the washroom and are able to figure out their friendship feels less contrived that you would think given the premise of this story. I felt awful for Indy. Sure, she brings a lot on herself by rebelling and not sharing her feelings, but it feels like a very real way that someone would react to finding out that their entire world could be coming down around them. The fact that her parents don't talk to her about what's going on until it's too late - and while no spoilers, it's not a huge surprise when the reveal happens - seems so inconsiderate of her mom and dad. I get why they did it, but the reality is that they shut her out and then they continue to shut her out by dealing with things themselves and not thinking about their daughter. I wanted to kick them both. Her mom was so angry at her dad; and her dad was just absent . . . . . Then, when everything blows up and you would think her parents would talk to her, they continue to keep her on the outside and, to make matters worse, ask her not to talk to anyone about what's going on. Which then leads to the misunderstandings with her friends and all the downward spiral on her life. Ugh. Yes, Indy didn't have to do what she did - there was choice there on her side too - but bottling up lies and secrets is awful. And being asked by the people you trust most to do that is so hard. I actually got teary a few times during the book. And my one reason for dropping this to a 4 star is actually linked to this as well, because I feel like her parents went from keeping everything from her to being more communicative in such a drastic shift that it went against the characters West had built up for them for most of the book. In terms of the other relationships, I loved how close Indy was to her friends and to Beau. And I loved that she had a chance through the bathroom lock in to find a way back to her friends and to heal. Yes, the ending wrapped up with a neat bow. But that was ok for me. I accepted it and moved on. All in all, good characters, a fast story, and solid writing and dialogue."
