Reviews

SPQR

"Exhaustive history of Rome. Well written and clear. I learned a great deal I didn't know before and found very interesting connections to today's world. Highly recommend."

A new view on the Senatus and Populus relationship

"very thorough. not your classical history book. Beard looks for more reasonable answers, beyong the myths regularly accepted"

Let down

"Just finished the book. I don't have any previous knowledge of roman history. Overall, I learned a great deal about its history and how the roman empire came to be with a general timeline. However, the author refers to alot of names and events in a sporadic fashion (and not in chronological order) that beginners of roman history will have no clue what she is referring to. I got lost many times and just had to power through paragraphs to remember what was the original point of the chapter. . . There are many small details that casual readers like me really couldn't care less. . . like what do the poor romans did for entertainment and how they lived. . . turns out it's just like the 21th century, but that was half a chapter. If you are a casual reader like me and want to gain a general knowledge of roman history, I'm sure there are better books. To be fair, some chapters were fun to read though."

Extensive look at Rome’s early History

"A bit of a dry read, but very informative on the very early growth of Rome and its cultural development."

Concerned C. (4/5)

Very digestible history of ancient Rome

"Being ""ancient"" Rome it doesn't focus entirely on the stuff covered more extensively in popular media (although it does extend to that point as well). The way it does so is engaging and fun without being obviously biased towards ""these people were bad"" or ""we don't really understand anything about these people"" or various other possible pitfalls histories can fall into."

Dylan H. (5/5)

Move over Riordan

"Informative and easily accessible history of the Roman Empire"

He Enjoys It

Updated review underway

"Bought this for my boyfriend. He hasn’t quite finished it yet but it loving so far, as he does most history books. A bit lengthier than his typical reads but will update once he’s gotten through reading it"

Beard tells this story precisely and clearly, with passion and without technical jargon…SPQR is a grim success story, but one told with wonderful flair. —Greg Woolf, Wall Street Journal

Though she here claims that 50 years of training and study have led up to SPQR, Beard wears her learning lightly. As she takes us through the brothels, bars, and back alleys where the populus Romanus left their imprint, one senses, above all, that she is having fun. —James Romm, New Republic

By the time Beard has finished, she has explored not only archaic, republican, and imperial Rome, but the eastern and western provinces over which it eventually won control…She moves with ease and mastery though archaeology, numismatics, and philology, as well as a mass of written documents on stone and papyrus.—G. W. Bowersock, New York Review of Books

In SPQR, her wonderful concise history, Mary Beard unpacks the secrets of the city's success with a crisp and merciless clarity that I have not seen equaled anywhere else. —Ferdinand Mount, New York Times Book Review

Beard does precisely what few popularizers dare to try and plenty of dons can’t pull off: She conveys the thrill of puzzling over texts and events that are bound to be ambiguous, and she complicates received wisdom in the process. Her magisterial new history of Rome, SPQR…is no exception…. The ancient Romans, Beard shows, are relevant to people many centuries later who struggle with questions of power, citizenship, empire, and identity. —Emily Wilson, The Atlantic

A masterful new chronicle…. Beard is a sure-footed guide through arcane material that, in other hands, would grow tedious. Sifting myth from fact in dealing with the early history of the city, she enlivens—and deepens—scholarly debates by demonstrating how the Romans themselves shaped their legendary beginnings to short-term political ends…. Exemplary popular history, engaging but never dumbed down, providing both the grand sweep and the intimate details that bring the distant past vividly to life.—The Economist
