Prescient and Prophetic.

"One of the earliest great books in the environment movement. Still a masterpiece."

Tom N. (5/5)

great read!

"author does a good job of making this text very comprehensive"

Mackenzie (5/5)

Silent spring is a fitting title. It alludes to environmental dead zones

"Great read! I read about Rachel Carson in an environmental issues class and I think this book is a great starting point for anyone interested in environmental injustice and pesticide use."

Nicole (5/5)

Anticipating Read

"Looking forward to reading this book. Glad it was available at Indigo"

Norman (5/5)

it reminds me of fairies, the title.

"still reading this, so far so good. for an environmental class so not my first choice of text"

Sydney M. (2/5)

Undeniable classic

"Carson's raw telling of the chemicals and pesticides used was instrumental in the US's utilisation of these foreign agents. It is a book before its time, and necessary reading for environmentalists."

Robert (5/5)

Amazing Read

"This book will seriously open your eyes to the importance of protecting nature, and demonstrates how incredibly interconnected everything in nature is. It is a must read for any one interested in the environment. I have an undergraduate degree in environmental studies, but yet this book still taught me so much."

Alicia (5/5)

Very much a contemporary classic.

"Despite the critiques of naysayers, Carson still writes one of the best introduction to the environmental question."

Camille (5/5)

The Book that Launched the Environmental Movement

"What is most surprising - and impressive - about Rachel Carson's 1962 book Silent Spring, which effectively kicked off the public environmental movement, is that it is still current, still relevant, and still a powerful call to action. Carson did for the environment movement what Jane Jacobs did for urban planning - gave voice, visibility, structure, and enduring direction to a core issue of modern society. First published to wide acclaim and readership in serial format in the New Yorker magazine, Silent Spring was quickly reissued in book format. Carson was both an expert in her field (masters degree in zoology; decades of field work) and a seasoned writer (editor-in-chief of the US Fish & Wildlife Department publications; author of several books), but perhaps because she was an outsider to academia (female, non-university employed), she wrote for a general audience. Though it is rich with scientific detail, it can be easily followed by any reader. The book consists of 17 short chapters, and befitting its serialized origin, each is concise, focussed on a particular issue, well researched and referenced, and rationally argued. For example, in chapter two Carson writes generally of the inconsistent and uncontrolled use of pesticides in agriculture, ""All this is not to say there is no insect problem and no need of control. I am saying, rather, that control must be geared to realities, not to mythical situations, and that the methods employed must be such that they do not destroy us along with the insects. "" In subsequent chapters she notes how agricultural and industrial chemicals can be stored in our bodies for many years, and how they can accumulate over time. She cites specific examples and specific chemicals, noting how each impacts the environment or particular beneficial organisms such as bees (50 years before our latest concern with neonicotinoids and mass bee die-offs). Though many of the specific environmental issues are now history, the general issues are not. Carson's central point - that we must question the benefits and the costs when we impact our environment - is clear in each of the book's examples, and in every subsequent example of the past 50 years. Above all, Silent Spring is a plea for accountability and transparency. It is a direct challenge to the assumption of the time that business is always right, that it has society's best interests at heart, and that government will advocate when necessary on behalf of citizens and the environment. The message of accountability and transparency is foundational to the environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues that are today raised by advocacy groups, and which also form the heart of Responsible Investment. Silent Spring should be on everyone's 'must read' list, both for its content and for its historical importance."
