Page Turner !

"This powerful novel by a local Canadian author is a gripping, thought-provoking read set within a northern Ontario jail. At its core, it explores the tragic death of a young Indigenous man in custody—but the story reaches far beyond that single event. From the very first pages, it’s a true page-turner. The writing is sharp, immersive, and emotionally charged, pulling you into a world that feels both intimate and unsettlingly real. What makes this book stand out is how it tackles complex and necessary conversations with nuance and depth. It sheds light on the experiences of women navigating male-dominated spaces, while also exploring themes of gender, identity, and the systemic realities faced by Indigenous communities in Canada. These layers add weight and urgency to the story, making it not just compelling, but important. This is the kind of book that stays with you after you finish it—one that sparks reflection, conversation, and a deeper awareness of issues that deserve attention. A must-read for anyone who appreciates meaningful storytelling with impact."

A read that holds you captive

"Hi Kevin. A few short weeks ago our mutual friend Brian Wessel gifted me your book . . gotta say it is a gift like no other. . . and not just because you gave me the honor of signing it, which I dearly appreciate. Fact is I am a prolific reader yet not in any way a writer, but Slam! A Death In Custody by Kevin West  I can think of no better way to describe this incredible book than to say this is  a gripping and authentic crime story that pulls the reader deep inside a world rarely seen.   The author suggests it's a tense investigative thriller,  Heck Yes to put it mildly.   My blood pressure was raised as I went along this brilliant roller coaster with compelling characters who are not simply players in a mystery but are people carrying experience, duty, and conscience. Impossible to describe in a few words just how this powerful sense of reality make it a page-turner that is difficult to put down.   An extrodinary rare debut filled with authenticity by one who knows the landscape. Yes filled with tension, but also with plenty of heart. One question remains. . Kevin West, when is your next book available??"

Eye catching

"A delicate balance between fiction and reality. This first time author, Kevin West, has a great knowledge of the World of Corrections in Canada. A suspense filled drama with light-hearted humour makes it an intricate page-turner. Would make a great mini-series. Can't wait to read the next adventure of Jake Stewart. This book rivals Lee Child's ""Reacher"""

SLAM! An Authentic Thriller

"In Kevin West's debut novel Slam! A Death in Custody, he draws on his nearly four decades of experience in Ontario's Correctional Services to provide an authentic and gripping look into the inner workings of the prison and justice system. West skillfully introduces readers to the complex structure of corrections, the intense daily challenges faced by staff and inmates alike, and the multitude of pressures, politics, and influences that shape the pursuit of fairness and justice in this challenging environment. The narrative pulses with realism, pulling you deep into the investigation of a death in custody while weaving in darker external threats, including a mysterious ""cleaner"" operating beyond prison walls. What stands out most is how closely the reader's tension mirrors that of the characters. As the criminal case unfolds with unexpected twists, turns, and revelations, the suspense builds relentlessly, keeping pages turning at a brisk pace. A compelling, eye-opening read that feels lived-in and true. I highly recommend Slam! to anyone interested in crime thrillers, justice system realities, or just a well-crafted page-turner."
