The History of Turkish Military Aircraft book-series charts the development of Turkish military aviation from its fragile first steps on the eve of the First World War to its current strength as one of the largest air forces in Europe. Richly illustrated with exclusive photographs and illustrations, the series provides a comprehensive account of the development of the Turkish Air Force through the aircraft it flew, including unique data on each individual machine in Turkish service. Volume 1 opens the series with the foundation of military aviation in Turkey in the context of the Ottoman Empire's waning years, its maturation during the First World War and subsequent near destruction after the Armistice, followed by its rebirth during the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923). It details all 62 aircraft types flown by the Ottoman and then Turkish Air Force during this period, including thorough service histories and 49 accompanying colour profiles. This wide variety encompassed French, British, German, and Russian designs, procured and maintained as often through subterfuge and guile as by conventional means: from Nieuport 17 fighters salvaged from a stranded steamer to DFW C.V reconnaissance aircraft restored using egg white and potato starch for service in the War of Independence. The product of decades of combined research by expert authors Ole Nikolajsen and Mehmet Halûk Sevel and generously illustrated with photography from the archives of the Turkish Air Force's History Branch, Turkish Military Aircraft, Volume 1 will appeal to anyone interested in Turkey's aviation heritage and the pioneer era of flight.

Born in 1943 in Denmark, Ole Nikolajsen is a dedicated aviation person, and has had a long career with flying. He started his pilot training in the Royal Danish Air Force in 1963 and served until 1969 as a navigator in the rescue and transport squadrons, acquiring 2000 flying hours. Then he continued training as an Air Traffic Control Officer and worked as such in Denmark, Malaysia, Abu Dhabi and Oman. In 1990 he organized a new training school in Oman and in 1992 he became leader of the Swiss Controller Training School. He worked as the leader of training concept developments and training quality control with the DFS in Germany and has been retired in France since 2002. While in the RDAF, Ole Nikolajsen published the history of 721 Squadron. In the seventies he edited, the aviation publication DANMIL, well known in Denmark. Having lived in Türkiye for some years as a school boy, he has much affection for this country and has thoroughly researched its largely unknown aviation history. In 2005 his book on "Turkish Military Aircraft since 1912" was published in English. Since then he has continued working on his Turkish Aviation trilogy with manuscripts on "Ottoman Aviation 1912-1919" and "85 years Civilian Aircraft in Türkiye 1925-2010". Ole Nikolajsen is well known in international aviation historian circles and has published numerous articles on aviation history both in Danish, English and German. This book on the occasion of the 100 years anniversary of Turkish military aviation is the culmination of 35 years of research on the subject. Ole Nikolajsen is married and has two married children one living in the USA and one in Denmark.
Mehmet Halûk Sevel was born in İstanbul in 1944 and he graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from the Technical University of Istanbul in 1969. He completed his military service as a reserve officer at the 4th AB in Ankara and at the Dept. of Engineering, Constructions and Housing of the TurAF during which he had the chance of visiting many air bases and TurAF facilities. After the completion of his military service, he started working as a mechanical engineer on heating-ventilation and air-conditioning which is his specialization. Since retirement in 2000 he is continuing his professional career as a technical consultant. Sevel's interest in aviation goes back to the high-school years when he started following the foreign aviation literature and started making scale-down aircraft models. In the last 10 years he concentrated his works on the History of Turkish Aviation. In the early 2000's he noticed that the coloured profiles of most of the Turkish aircraft did not exist and therefore he diverted his works to this subject. During his work covering the past ten years he has completed more than 500 coloured profiles. Some of his works have been published within Türkiye and abroad. Some of the profiles are used in this book published for the 100th anniversary of the TurAF. His profile works are continuing. In addition to his profile works Mr Sevel has also written articles and participated the preparation of some books. He is the editor of the section "airplanes" at www.tayyareci.com . Some of his articles are also presented at the same website. He has also cooperated with the History Branch of the TurAF for the second edition of the series "Aircraft Families in the TurAF" composed of 10 books. M. Halûk Sevel, whose works on aviation are continuing, is married and has two children and he is living in KarÅıyaka-Izmir.
