Mo Seto is Cool!

"Mo Seto is an awesome book that both myself and my students loved!"

A Fun, Action-Packed Middle Grade Adventure

"A. Y. Chan’s The Legendary Mo Seto is an exciting and empowering story that blends martial arts, family, and self-discovery in a way that will captivate young readers. Mo Seto is a strong, relatable protagonist—smart, determined, and struggling to prove herself in a world that doesn’t always take her seriously. The martial arts tournament setting brings plenty of thrilling action, but the heart of the story lies in Mo’s journey to understand her family, heritage, and inner strength. Chan’s writing is fast-paced, engaging, and full of humour, making this a great pick for fans of The Karate Kid or Front Desk by Kelly Yang. The themes of perseverance, identity, and friendship are beautifully woven into the story, making it both an entertaining and meaningful read. Highly recommended for middle-grade readers and anyone who loves a good underdog story!"

Loved it!

"I was so kindly sent this book to read and review after the lovely A. Y. Chan reached out to me to see if I wanted to read it. I of course said yes and finally after one book got lost in the mail a copy arrived and I’m so glad it did. I honestly enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would. I really had no idea what to expect. I loved Mo!! I like that she’s kid of a rebel and wanted something so bad that no one was going to stop her to get what she wanted. She over came bullying and in the end because friends with her bully. She gained respect from so many people, because again so did whatever it took to get what she wanted. She’s a kick butt character. I also really enjoyed that she became more than her tininess, and used that to her advantage. My second fave character was her fitness grandpa hahaha I love that he just pretended to be her guardian so she could meet those goals. #grandparentgoal. The overall story was also really good. I was super engrossed in it, and I couldn’t out it down, I needed to know what was going to happen and everything else too. I’m so excited for my daughter to get a bit older so she can read it and also se that just because your a girl you can do whatever sports you want to do and even if you small don’t let it stop you. I just saw there’s a book two and I’m going to need it ahha. I would recommend this one to everyone!"

Secret societies, adventure and mystery oh MY!

"As a mom of who spent a lot of time watching both of my sons study martial arts (my youngest son in karate and my eldest son in taekwondo - getting his Black belt at 16 years old), I spent a lot of time in dojos and dojangs watching my sons study and compete. Needless to say, this book about a young martial artist, an ancient book and her family's secret past intrigued me. Modesty 'Mo' Seto loves studying taekwondo and she's really good at it. But her focus on her small size is getting in the way of her success and it doesn't help that her biggest adversary has hit a growth spurt over the summer and is dominating competitions. He may be her biggest competition when it's announced that her hero, martial artist and actor Cody Kwok will be holding auditions for a protégé for his next movie. Focused on all the things she believes she can't do; Mo fears her small stature and lack of support at home will prevent her from reaching her goals. Enter her BFF (and comic relief) Ignacious (aka Nacho), a trick or two, a lot of determination and a secret book that teaches Mo a new martial art and information about her family's mysterious history. With all that going on, Mo just might have a chance! This was a fun OwnVoices underdog debut story that has action, humour, heart and life lessons about finding your strength, keeping secrets, friendship, complicated familial relationships. The story is entertainingly farfetched and takes a bit to get into the action, but I enjoyed the fast-paced action scenes, the inclusion of secret societies, sabotage and mystery. This is a strong start to a new children's chapter book series. Disclaimer: Thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with a complimentary hardcover copy of this book which was given in exchange for my honest review."

Great action packed story

"The Legendary Mo Seto by AY Chan_x000D_ _x000D_ Book review: 3. 75/5 ⭐️_x000D_ Genre: middle school_x000D_ Themes: martial arts, coming of age_x000D_ 📖 Read if you like: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Mulan, Jackie Chan_x000D_ _x000D_ Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley for this ARC. _x000D_ _x000D_ This was a high octane martial arts focused ride for middle school readers. Modesty (Mo) Seto is a self-conscious young girl who just wishes she were a little taller, a little larger, a little better understood by her mother and a little more recognized by her father. A junior taekwondo black belt, Mo has recently been on a loosing streak as all her competitors grow and she continues to be small. As her archnemesis Dax once again beats her during a final competition in which her Dad and number one fan walks out of, Mo’s life begins to spiral. _x000D_ _x000D_ As she attempts to win back her place at the top and make her Dad proud Mo is drawn into the world of Hollywood with the chance to meet and star alongside her favourite martial arts movie star Cody Kwok. Needing to set herself apart, Mo is determined to learn Xiaoxi Fu, an ancient and secret dance-like martial arts sequence passed down from her ancestors that she uncovered hidden away in the basement. But, all is not as it seems in this star crusted world and Mo will have to learn to see the truth for herself. As someone attempts to sabotage the movie auditions, while Mo’s Dad is once again missing in action she must solve the mystery for herself and find her confidence. _x000D_ _x000D_ Fully equipped with secret societies, espionage, and some thrilling stunts this was certainly a page turner. The underlying morals are of course about recognizing your own strength, living up to parental expectations, valuing those who have always been there for you and learning to be happy with who you are making it a great book for those in middle school dealing with changing bodies and a new consciousness. It is written in the style of a junior reader with far-fetched events, and certain plot twists that were fairly predictable, but I didn’t mind so much as an adult reader given how layered the story was. It reads just like a movie and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot-forward narrative, and could recognize some of my former self in Mo. _x000D_ _x000D_ I adored Mo’s best friend with his collection of hilariously quirky shirts and well researched facts. He was the yin to her yang and the pair made a good duo. The one thing I found problematic in this book was that he was nicknamed Nacho. Having your one Latin American character with a super stereotypical reference and no funny origin story to back up the name just reads as really inappropriate to me. He had so many other interesting characteristics and hobbies that could have inspired a nickname, but instead one was selected that purely reflected his culture. I don’t think kids need any more reasons to discriminate, but perhaps I am sensitive to this having grown up a rare splash of colour with a different cultural background in my community. It just felt odd given the Mo’s arc was about finding her identity outside of appearances. Dropped half a star for this."

"Chan has created a brave, athletic girl whose realistic struggles with her identity and what she’s capable of will resonate. Readers will find themselves rooting for Mo’s success and enthralled with the relatable characterization that fills the pages. An exciting mystery-adventure story that packs a punch."
A. Y. Chan grew up in Canada’s Greater Toronto Area reading all the middle grade and young adult books she could get her hands on. To this day, those remain her favorite genres. After achieving her black belt in Taekwondo, she explored other martial arts, such as Wing Chun, Hapkido, and Muay Thai. These days, she continues her martial arts training some mornings, writes in the afternoons, takes long walks to muddle out plot points, and falls asleep reading.
