The Odyssey of The Common Man

"Quintessential for Hemingway, an incomparable author who can always show you fear in a handful of dust. The story focuses on a quiet, insignificant life, but through Hemingway's prose, a dime-a-dozen man is transfigured into a Homerian hero for one exhilarating night. It's a Cinderella-esque tale, with all the awesome splendor and excitement, but there are no magical pumpkins or slippers. Instead, it's Hemingway's remarkably sparse, undecorated prose that evokes torrential emotion and an awe-inspiring vastness to the text. His ability to stir up the most fascinating ideas and feelings from such scant, plain prose has never been as thrilling as it is in The Old Man and The Sea. You will taste the iron tang of a freshly gutted fish, feel the irate burn of a taut rope bound across your bare chest, and exhaust yourself with the entire scope of Sisyphus' eternal frustration and joy in a smattering of pages that has rightfully cemented Hemingway's status as one of America's great authors."

The Old Man and the Sea review

"Very good work by Hemingway with lots of lessons to apply in our own lives."

A feeling of wonder

"One of those books that doesn’t exist on the pages as much as it does in your mind. A painting where the artist’s colours are not just the blue and green of the sea, but awe, magnificence, determination, and wonder."

Pulitzer prize worthy

"The Old Man and the Sea is a beautifully written novel that throws you in the struggles of an old fisherman as he faces, unbeknownst to him, the greatest battle of his life. Hemingway’s expert descriptive writing is on full display here. His ability to paint such real images of the sea, the old man’s isolation and pain, and his unwavering determination is amazing. I’m not a fisherman, nor have I ever gone fishing before, but I felt like I was right there beside him in his skiff, off the coast of Havana, battling this great marlin. One of the most powerful aspects of the novel is Hemingway’s portrayal of the old man’s pain and suffering. His exhaustion, hunger, and the never-ending pain of holding onto his fishing lines are described in such detail that you almost feel his aching muscles and bleeding calloused hands. His endurance—both physical and mental—makes his struggle incredibly moving. The battle with the marlin is epic. The sheer size and strength of the fish, the way the old man respects it as a worthy opponent, and the moment of triumph of catching it followed by devastating loss make for quite a story. The heartbreak of his return,empty-handed, was tough to read. I sometimes got a bit lost in the technical descriptions of the fishing line mechanics, but I did my best to picture them. The book explores themes of perseverance and hardship. The old man shows that true victory, in a sense, isn’t always in the final result but in the effort. I also found a deep sense of loneliness throughout the book—not a tragic loneliness, but a quiet one if that makes sense. In the end, The Old Man and the Sea is a short yet compelling story about resilience, respect for the sea, and a battle of honour. Hemingway’s writing is powerful, and it’s easy to see why he won the Pulitzer Prize for this. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a novel that, despite being quite short (126 pages), leaves a mark."

Minimalist Masterpiece

"This is Hemingway in peak form and clarity. Genuine reflections on a life long lived and the damages it causes the body and the revelations that come as a result. I will surely read this many more times throughout my life."

“A beautiful tale, awash in the seasalt and sweat, bait and beer of the Havana coast. It tells a fundamental human truth: in a volatile world, from our first breath to our last wish, through triumphs and pitfalls both trivial and profound, what sustains us, ultimately, is hope.”
The Guardian

“His masterpiece... a perfect piece of work.”
—Mario Vargas Llosa

“The old man embodies the ambition and courage it takes to live, and the need to redeem yourself again and again in your own eyes. When at last after ntold agonies you hook the prize, the achievement of a lifetime, the biggest damn fish out there…it falls apart. The story is about the fact that life ends—a hard-to-ignore truth that we spend our days ignoring. All you have is the moment, this moment.”
—Abraham Verghese

"Here is the master technician once more at the top of his form, doing superbly what he can do better than anyone else.”
The New York Times
Ernest Hemingway did more to change the style of English prose than any other writer of his time. Publication of The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms immediately established Hemingway as one of the greatest literary lights of the twentieth century. His classic novel The Old Man and the Sea won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953. Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. Known for his larger-than-life personality and his passions for bullfighting, fishing, and big-game hunting, he died in Ketchum, Idaho, on July 2, 1961.
