Cozy autumn read!

"An amazing read! Perfect for the cozy autumn season."

One of the best book of 2025

"One of the most beautiful books I have ever read. The stories of different people aligning together. This book is like a wine. Read it slow, one chapter a day. Take it all in."

PASSENGERS ON THE HANKYU LINE.

"excellent book on life in Japan by the author of '''The Travelling Cat Chronicles''. . . one of the best books i've ever read."

Beth G. (5/5)

This novel struck me with the same comfort as the Kamogawa Food Detectives and What You Are Looking For Is In The Library, both of which I had so thoroughly enjoyed.

"Something I find very enjoyable in reading translated literature is examining whether or not subtext and emotion are lost within the process of translation. As someone who often attempts to translate idioms from Korean to English and the other way around, it seems ridiculous to directly translate the words and expect someone to understand rather than it is to find a cultural equivalent. And so, translated literature is often stripped bare of long prose but attempts to convey deeper meaning through simpler, bare-bone language, which contains its own charm. The Passengers On The Hankyu Line reminded me of why I enjoy translated literature as I do, and its interwoven narrative connecting the varying, intersecting passengers to the train was both familiar yet a joy to read. Its themes of serendipity and healing were, once again, a familiar yet comforting narrative. Overall, this novel was like a warm hug from an old friend who might tell you enthusiastically simple yet enticing stories of strangers you have never met. I hope to return to this author's writing and witness the same warmth and familiarity anew, as one sees the cherry blossoms fall each passing spring and yet finds new joy in each year's petals."

Sincere, poignant, and compelling!

"The Passengers on the Hankyu Line is a pensive, heart-tugging novel that takes you into the lives of a handful of people, each with their own struggles, troubles, and heartbreaks as their worlds become momentarily intertwined while travelling on a train heading from Takarazuka to Nishinomiya. The prose is eloquent and insightful. The characters are unique, sympathetic, and endearing. And the plot is an absorbing tale of life, love, friendship, support, generosity, honesty, guidance, acceptance, forgiveness, romance, humour, introspection, and loss. Overall, The Passengers on the Hankyu Line is a reflective, touching, heartwarming tale by Arikawa that reminds us of what’s truly important in life and highlights the sheer power of kindness and compassion."
