"Brilliantly conceived and executed, The Pastoral Theology of the Early Church is one of those rare books useful to both scholars and pastors. Neither technology nor culture has rendered obsolete the wisdom of Ignatius, Irenaeus, Augustine, and Basil. This would be an excellent way to introduce seminarians to the study of the Fathers. The contributors are among the brightest lights in the field of patristics."?Michael Aquilina, St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology

"This volume brings together renowned specialists in Patristics to explore pastoral theology through sustained engagement with major figures such as Irenaeus, Origen, Ambrose, Augustine, John Chrysostom, and Maximus the Confessor. Combining historical precision with theological depth, the contributions demonstrate how patristic approaches to pastoral care, moral formation, and ecclesial leadership continue to offer enduring resources for contemporary reflection. A valuable work for scholars, students, and all attentive to the living tradition of the early Church."?Kolawole Chabi, OSA, Pontifical Patristic Institute, Augustinianum, Rome

"Pastoral theology has become, and perhaps has often been, a somewhat fugitive notion, compared with dogmatic theology, moral theology, natural theology, ascetical theology, and so on. And yet the truth is that all real theology has to be nourishment for the life of the Church, and this volume, with its wonderful array of scholars, demonstrates the variety of ways in which this has been realized."?Andrew Louth, Durham University

"This volume will be a welcome resource for seminarians and pastoral leaders who desire to practice the ?art of arts,? that is, pastoral leadership whose primary focus is the formation of souls to live a vibrant Christian life in the world with hearts that long for union with God in the life to come."?Susan Timoney, The Catholic University of America
