NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Engaging and fast-paced, this gripping coming-of-age novel of chess, feminism, and addiction speeds to a conclusion as elegant and satisfying as a mate in four. Now a highly acclaimed, award-winning Netflix series.
Eight year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of sixteen, she’s competing for the U.S. Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

"I LOVE the way that cover is of Beth from the series. Also it’s the perfect length book, not too long but not insanely short. The show was pretty much taken word for word from the book, and that’s in a good way because the book is written so well I feel like it could be good for teens to adults."

Both the show and book should be framed in the louvre
"I watched the show first and was unaware it was based off a book. But my god was this book a masterpiece. I loved the show, Anya Taylor Joy is unstoppable and going into it. I knew what happened, I knew the ending, but I still felt such a rush reading this book."
— Chlomoney (5/5)
Nice read
"Love the book as much as the tv show. Recommend for any fans curious to see how the novel compares."

The Queen’s Gambit review
"This book and television show were both intriguing and I felt really connected to the characters. This book is my favourite book of all time as it shows the determination and the falls of Beth Harmon. The falls of Beth Harmon really made the character more realistic as it reminds us that she is just a human being too. It gives us a lesson that is worth remembering: we must work with others who support us in order to stay on the right track."
