A great read

"While I originally bought this book for it's insights on Marius, I welcomed the lead up with some background history to truly understand why Marius was such a pivotal figure and how he was able to set the foundation for later Consuls to become as powerful as they did. I would definitely recommend it for both the casual historian and those studying history formally."

A Unique Read

"Somewhere above entry-level, but below inaccessible, The Storm Before The Storm is a much-needed examination of why the Roman Republic fell, with very real implications for the modern world. If you know your Consuls from your Senators, your Plebians from your Patricians, and your Carthage from your Rome, then you'll find this book a fascinating read. Mike Duncan is a famed conversational historian. In his podcasts, he breaks down for the average listener the history of Rome and - more recently - the Revolutions of the modern world. Combining his skills in these two fields, the Storm Before the Storm is a fascinating look at how rising inequality led to a breakdown of Roman society, where the rules and laws stopped mattering. Many works have brought the famous Julias Caesar to the public attention, but precious few works have stopped to ask why the checks and balances put in place to stop him from overthrowing the Republic failed. If there is one period in Roman history that parallels modern America, it is this, claims Mike Duncan."

It was good

"I disagree with the previous reviewers. Not sure what the expectations were but the book is quite good, a solid introduction into a less traveled area of history. I knew bits and pieces about this period but the book takes one through details, which are so important since that is where the devil hides. Indeed, it is not a spectacular book but it accomplishes its purpose and I read it without any pain."

Wonderful!

"This is a wonderful look into less traveled areas of history. . . . and although not quite as in-depth in other previously visited perspectives. . . . I appreciated the efforts applied here."

Dry Read

"A pretty dry read and some times hard to follow. An okay read if you're looking for some history and a light read."
