“Brilliant, riveting, so beautifully written, impossible to put down.” —Louise Penny, #1 New York Times bestselling author
Inspired by a true literary mystery, the New York Times bestselling author of the mesmerizing The Secret Book of Flora Lea returns with the sweeping story of a legendary book, a lost mother, and a daughter’s search for them both.
In 1927, eight-year-old Clara Harrington’s magical childhood shatters when her mother, renowned author, Bronwyn Newcastle Fordham, vanishes off the coast of South Carolina. Bronwyn stunned the world with a book written in an invented language that became a national sensation when she was just twelve years old. Her disappearance leaves behind not only a devoted husband and heartbroken daughter, but also the hope of ever translating the sequel to her landmark work. As the headlines focus on the missing author, Clara yearns for something far deeper and more insatiable: her beloved mother.
By 1952, Clara is an illustrator raising her own daughter, Wynnie. When a stranger named Charlie Jameson contacts her from London claiming to have discovered a handwritten dictionary of her mother’s lost language. Clara is skeptical. Compelled by the tragedy of her mother’s disappearance, she crosses the Atlantic with Wynnie only to arrive during one of London’s most deadly natural disasters—the Great Smog. With asthmatic Wynnie in peril, they escape the city with Charlie and find refuge in the Jameson’s family retreat nestled in the Lake District. It is there that Clara must find the courage to uncover the truth about her mother and the story she left behind.
“Graceful in its telling and so very wise in its insights, The Story She Left Behind is a book that will capture your heart, lift your spirits, and delight your soul” (William Kent Krueger, New York Times bestselling author).

“The Story She Left Behind is an intriguing novel that reminds us that the power of love and the power of words are one and the same. Patti Callahan Henry introduces us to a missing mother, her grieving daughter, and their entwined, unforgettable journeys. Inspired by an unsolved literary mystery, and layered with magical storytelling it is both real and imaginative—in the way of all great fiction. Not to be missed!” — ARIEL LAWHON, New York Times bestselling author of I Was Anastasia and The Frozen River

Magical
"I was so moved by how magical and beautifully written I found this book to be. Gifts of ancient, familiar and imagined languages, words and poetry. Also about love, loss and the power of make believe. Often I had to stop and just contemplate the deep meaning of what I had just read or a different way of looking at the world around us. I could not put it down, but I was also sad when it was over. I believe that this is a book that I will read again with joy."

To be honest, it was the title that caught my attention followed by the inside description of the storyline.
"Enjoyed the book as it has a fresh storyline and told from a female perspective - as a former museum professional, I enjoyed the entire description of the household and its contents which """"seemed"""" to be well researched and accurate. I also appreciate reading a book written by a gay author - I want to read more of this man's books."

Riveting
"Riveting with mystery wondering what happened to Clara's mother Bronwyn, I could not put this down and finished the book within one day! I always enjoy novels around families and their unsolved issues, and this novel is full of adventure, suspense, alongside experiencing various emotions for each of the characters, over an extensive period of time. This is the first book I have ever read from author Patti Callahan Henry, and I recommend it! I am now searching for my next book from this same author."

Intrigue & Wonderment
"One woman's journey into her mother's disappearance and why she'd leave? Grieving her mother and being unable to find answers from others close to her. She sets off to discover what she hoped would be a trail to discovering her mother's reasons and also her language she created to describe things she couldn't articulate to others. The search takes her from her home in the US to the big city of London. More intrigue, heartbreak and love. Great journey into the Land of Lakes, to meet characters we loved in childhood. A young girls longing for her mother and the woman's search for the story she left behind."
