Motivating story for kids about growth mindset.

"Love the story about perseverance and to always have a growth mindset."

Fantastic Growth Mindset Book

"This is such a great story to support growth mindset and perseverance - trying even in the face of discomfort or fear. I especially like how it doesn't end with Lou being 'successful' in the traditional sense of the word, but with a willingness to come back and try again another time. This helps keep the cute story realistic. Given the highly successful 'The Most Magnificent Thing,' I'm surprised this newer book by Ashley Spires hasn't received more attention. It's really wonderful! #plumreview"

The Thing Lou Couldn't Do by Ashley Spires

"Lou is a highly adventurous brave girl. But when her friends decide to make a tree into an imaginary pirate ship and climb it, Lou is hesitant. She tries all the delay tactics that we try when we don't want to do something. She suggests alternative games to play, comes up with excuses, and tries to think of ways to get up into the tree without actually climbing it. Finally, she tries to climb the tree. The illustrations are absolutely great, and there is a lot of humour peppered throughout the book for some laugh out loud moments. This is a really nice children's picture book for around ages 3-5 and the characters talk with speech bubbles."

Great for all Ages

"Climbing trees is such a rite of passage for a child. The moment they realize that they can move their bodies like little monkeys and get themselves high up into the branches where they can look down on the whole world around them is magical. In The Thing Lou Couldn't Do, author/illustrator Ashley Spires, Binky The Space Cat, gives us the story of Lou, aka Captain Lou Skullbuckle, and her friends who are brave adventurers. When her friends turn the branches of the backyard tree into their pirate ship, Lou thinks she would prefer to play a not-up-in-a-tree game. Lou is very unsure about the whole climbing a tree thing but she doesn't let that deter her. The Thing Lou Couldn't do is the perfect little story for your children, especially those who may be a little less adventurous. The story demonstrates that it's okay to be afraid of things and it is okay to fail, as long as we pick ourselves back up again and try. A sweet story about friendships, empathy, facing challenges and resilience. The distinctive illustrations bring a liveliness and sense of play to the story, inviting the reader in from page one. Another thing Lou's story does is promotes the importance of outdoor, physical play and gross motor development. It is so necessary for our children to be given opportunities to be outside playing and discovering how their bodies move. Published by Kids Can Press. #plumreview"

Great buy

"Lou is a courageous girl that does not wish to admit her fear of climbing. Just like everyone else, she feels as if her friends knew this fact, then she would be considered weird. Her excuses for not wanting to join her friends up the tree are hilarious. Interestingly enough, her friends do not mock her or make Lou feel bad about herself for not joining them. By simply observing her friends and their display of how fun it is to be up there, Lou then decides to make her choice. This is I believe the best part of the story. She makes the decision to ‘try’. Sometimes in life, we are scared of certain things. Anxiety withdraws us from even wanting to try it. We may not even wish to confront this fear, however, until then, we will never know! Lou fails in climbing the tree, but that is not the point of this story. By simply trying, she sets a positive example. As the description of the book itself says: “This book makes a perfect choice for a character education discussion about courage or resilience, or a life-skills lesson on facing challenges. The story also promotes the joy of imaginative play in the outdoors. ” Any parent looking for a good read for their child must have this. Written by Jeyran Main"

Inspirational message. . . yes, you can!

"Lou is a typical kid that loves playing with her friends. Together they can run faster than airplanes, build mighty fortresses and rescue wild animals. Lou is strong, brave and can do anything. . . but can she really? One day her friends in an exploring frenzy decide to climb a tree. Lou is with them, all in, but suddenly puts the brakes on when she confronts that tree face to bark. She's never climbed a tree before. It looks scary and makes Lou very uncomfortable. She starts making excuses why it is impossible for her to engage in such a foreign (and dreaded) activity: she has to change her shoes, her arm is sore, the cat needs a walk, she shouldn't climb so soon after reading, she has to attend a slug funeral, an asteroid is heading her way, and her tummy hurts, just to name a few. But the real reason? ""I can't climb a tree. "" Her friends gather round her and encourage her to try. . . together they will help her succeed. She conjures up in her imagination ways she can get to the top of that tree such as jumping on a trampoline, pole vaulting up maybe? or even being hoisted high to the very top by a helicopter. Do you think Lou can do it? Can she muster up the courage and fortitude to make the climb happen? Oh my! Lou will never know if she doesn't give it a try. This story is about empowerment, persevering against all odds, facing your fears head on and overcoming them. It is a book of inspiration and hope to those who are convinced they CAN'T, and to their great delight learn to their great amazement. . . . YES. THEY. CAN."
