A great debut romance

"A delightful story about alternate timelines where one learns that even the tough things happen to set things in motion in a way you can't even imagine. I didn't realize until I had finished that this was the debut novel of the author who wrote the delightful Kitty St. Clair's Last Dance. Gemma is sick and tired of thinking about her ex who sapped so much from her and had her betraying her own dreams for his sake. Her aunt, trying to be helpful, passes along an old book featuring a forgetting spell. She doesn't really believe in it, especially the part where she needs to kiss someone, but in a drunken haze she does it, kissing her best friend in the process. She wakes up in a completely different reality, one where she pursued her dreams. I'm a big sucker for transformation stories so seeing how things could be different, while also learning more about her sister and taking a chance on something more with her best friend (who didn't know her because she met him and her ex the same night) was gratifying. The ending was just perfect. The biggest delight is that the story is set in Hamilton. When she talks about being walking distance from the GO Station, I know exactly where she is, as I had a friend I would visit frequently who was there. I did the Hamilton Fringe back in 2018 so I experienced the James Street vibe she talks about. I love that romance has evolved and Canadian authors no longer have to set their story either in the US or Britain. This is definitely worth a read."

Hamiltonian here.

"As someone living in Hamilton this book was amazing. First time seeing my hometown in a romance and it made my heart swell."

Great read! I wanted more when it ended.

"Easy read and I loved Kate’s style of writing. This book to me was a mix of the Family Man (one my favourite movies) meets 50 shades, but it was its own unique story. I had myself wishing for more and also to see this play out on screen one day."

13 going on 30 meets Back to the Future, but make

"Kate Robb‘s debut novel is definitely one to look out for! A magic spell meant to cure her heartbreak propels Gemma into an alternative timeline, where she never met her ex-boyfriend, but also finds herself without her best guy friend, Dax. Gemma finds herself trying to get him back j to her life and finds herself asking “what if” the feeling between herself and Dax would not stay strictly platonic…_x000D_ Wit, heart, and charm are sprinkled all throughout the novel."

Canadian Sliding Doors

"I was excited when I realized that this book was set in and around Hamilton. I have been there a few times and so the landmarks and the whole vibe was very familiar to me, as a Canadian and someone who has been in the area. Because so many books are NOT set in Canada, I did have to do a bit of a double take and ask myself ""wait, did she really say Hamilton there"" but it was clear when she mentioned Toronto . . . . For the book itself, I have always found anything to do with time travel a challenge. This time, though, it was more parallel realities which I can handle. I did find Gemma a bit annoying sometimes especially with her inability to see that she was so needy with her sister. Those types of leads bother me even though I have no siblings from which to frame the experience. Just seems very unkind to always go to your sibling for help, expect them to drop their lives to support you, and then not really even ask them how they are doing despite noting that they may not be doing great. It's also how I think she neglected to really see Dax in both timelines. _x000D_ _x000D_ Dax and Gemma are fun characters despite everything, and I enjoyed so many of the elements of this book, including all of the extra folks around them, that it was hard to really hold Gemma being selfish against it. Maybe we could have skipped some of the ""he's my friend so I don't want to mess this up"" which took up a lot of bandwidth but other than that, an enjoyable romance with a Sliding Doors vibe, although only just a bit because you only really see one Gemma story. _x000D_ _x000D_ Oh. And I am still totally wondering what happened to Other Gemma. Was this a true trading spaces in which case is there a sequel like Lost in Austen where you see the alternate reality unfurl?!"

“A quick-witted friends-to-lovers exploration with just the right touch of magic.”Kirkus Reviews
Kate Robb dated a lot of duds in her twenties (amongst a few gems) all providing excellent fodder to write weird and wild romantic comedies. She lives just outside of Toronto, Canada where she spends her free time pretending she’s not a hockey mom while whispering “hustle” under her breath from the bleachers, a Pinot Grigio concealed in her YETI mug. She hates owls, the word “whilst” and wearing shorts and aspires to one day be able to wear four-inch heels again.
