A good read

"This is the second in the Orphan Train series and chronicles the journey of the second Neumann sister as she worked as an agent for the Children's Aid Society in sending children out to Illinois to be placed for adoption. Jody's intent was to try and give an agent's perspective as they travelled with the children, their love for the children and then their need to let them go to their new parents. She also tried to give some perspective from the children's viewpoint as well. I'm sure the whole orphan train had so many pros and cons: there were some good families who took in the children and there were some not so good families. Then there were those children who nobody wanted that felt once more the crush of rejection. Anyway, that's a different story. That story line was good. Of course, there was the romance in the story as well: two single placing out agents, one male and one female and you know the rest of the story with the unexpected twists and turns. There were a few really key things to me in this story though. Both of the main characters were holding on to past mistakes and wounds and refusing to forgive themselves. Here are a few quotes from the book that I think are really good. ""But don't you think sometimes it takes even greater courage to accept our losses? And not just accept them, but move on and continue to live?. . . . I lost Sophie and Olivia and Nicholas. I can hate and blame myself forever. That's actually the easy thing to do. What takes strength is to finally forgive myself and make peace with what happened. "" I just thought that was good. I can hold on to mistakes I've made and blame myself or I can choose to forgive myself and let God's forgiveness cover me and move forward and live a full life again. Again on courage from earlier in the book. ""He said it takes great courage to accept what I can't change, and even more courage to move forward and live my life to the fullest in spite of how achingly hard it is to face each new day. . . . What I've learned is that courage takes many forms. . . "" I really liked those thoughts on courage as well. I did enjoy the story, even though I would say it was fairly predictable, but like I mentioned there were some real gems to be mined in the midst of the story. I received this book from Bethany House and was not required to write a positive review."

Book two is just as amazing as boon one

"The second book in Jody Hedlund's Orphan Train series is just as captivating as the first one. You can totally read Together Forever as a standalone novel but I do feel like you'll get some of the emotional undercurrents better if you've read With You Always. And this is such an amazing series you'll be more than happy to lose yourself in both stories. Once again, Hedlund dazzles with fascinating historical facts that boggle the mind and then she weaves an exceptional story around them. The whole concept of the Orphan Trains -- the haphazard paperwork, the almost casual way children are placed in homes. . . I can't even. In some ways it reminded me of a slave auction though no money exchanged hands. And they didn't seem to be too worried about ensuring that all the children were actually orphans. That's not to say that the intent wasn't honorable. . . it was just so. . . casual. But the New York City slums were death traps so desperation drove this innovative solution to saving children's lives. Against that intriguing backdrop, Marianne and Drew are paired as placing agents heading west with 30 orphans to place along the way. She's hired on in a desperate attempt to track her missing sister. He's running from a painful past. The air crackles at their first meet and rises to a sizzle as they get to know each other on the journey. Simply put, Drew is a heartthrob. A man who loves women and knows how to flirt and tease and curl toes. Marianne is smitten in spite of herself and you'll definitely want to plump up the cushions on your fainting couch so swooning accidents can be kept at a minimum. But this story isn't all sizzle and spice -- the plot twists and turns in unexpected ways and both hero and heroine wrestle with an inability to forgive themselves for issues that belong in the past. Together Forever is an emotionally charged, page-turning-frenzy of delight!"

Hedlund's fans will no doubt enjoy this one

"Weaving together intriguing historical settings with dramatic plot elements, Jody Hedlund's second addition to the ""Orphan Train"" series will grab you from the first few pages and warm your heart while doing so. As someone who works with children myself, I really enjoyed the glimpse this story gives readers into the lives of the orphans who were placed with a variety of families in Illinois. Hedlund does an excellent job at capturing the emotions that these children would have faced, from fear to rejection to excitement in the case of those finding a good placement. I also enjoyed the way that Hedlund peers into the lives of both young orphans and also older teen orphans, showing the difficulty these older youths would have found leaving the streets they've grown up on to then be placed with a family in what must have seen a truly foreign setting in comparison. Likewise, I enjoyed glimpsing what it would have been like for the ""placing agents"" to have to connect and bond with these children and then say goodbye when they were placed with families that the agents really knew very little about. I have to admit that I didn't always enjoy the romantic interactions between Marianne and Drew as they sometimes seemed over the top to me. However, the last third of the story really appealed to me, as their feelings for each other are put to the test and are refined as the events of the story unfold, displaying a love of the best kind, a love built on truth and loyalty and faith. As readers learn of the tragedy that these characters have experienced in their pasts, we come to appreciate each of them in a whole new way, rooting for blessings to fall on them after the hard times they've lived through. Hedlund has really succeeded at bringing the story to life, while throwing some moments into the story that I didn't see coming, a style of writing I always look forward to. Fans of the first Orphan Train novel from Hedlund will no doubt enjoy this follow-up novel as well, as they again step back in time to the mid 1800's. I award this novel a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars. Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc."

Together Forever with GOD

"Together Forever Is the second one in the series. It is secrets, orphans, tragedies, searching, bad choices, good choices, high emotions, connections, mystery and Faith. Don't worry though it may be the second in a series but it is a wonderful stand alone book. The author is so talented and knowledgeable about her historical facts it is so fascinating - it only makes the story all the better. These children and caretakers came to life for me straight off the pages. Now that is an awesome book. I received a copy of this review from the Publisher and Netgalley; all of the opinions expressed in this review are all my own. if you would like to read more of my Christian book reviews go to christianlybookreviewers. blogspot. com"

Orphan Train

"I loved this book as much as I did the first one in this series, a part of American history, and we get to see it first-hand. This is the second Neumann sister’s story, Marianne, and we get to walk in her shoes as she travels with the orphans to find them new homes in Illinois. You watch her do what she isn’t supposed to do, become attached to these precious children, and become attracted to her fellow agent Andrew, another no no. I really found myself page turning, and not wanting to put the book down, I had to know how things turned out. With some chuckles, some heart break, and life struggles, this story has it all. Now I can’t wait for the next book for the lost sister Sophie, and maybe the lost orphans, and I still don’t like Rheinhold’s aunt and what she did! I received this book through Celebrate Lit Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review."

2nd book in series

"Together Forever is book 2 in the Orphan Train Series involving sisters Elise, Marianne and Sophie. With You Always is the first one and I highly recommend starting there to get a better sense of the history of these sisters. As Marianne boards the train bound for Illinois she gets more than she bargained for. Her goal was to find her sister, Sophie, but rather she bonds with the kids and the distant Andrew who is also hiding secrets from his past. When tragedy strikes so much changes. Together Forever is a story of self discovery, forgiving oneself and of letting go. I enjoyed the history aspect here, how scared those kids must have been traveling and then placed with complete strangers. The romance part played out somewhat as I expected. Faith is a big part of the story especially with 2 characters carrying a lot of guilt. This was an enjoyable story highlighting the early life of The Children's Aid Society, how it operated and the struggles of the children and workers. This series continues with Searching For You scheduled to be released in Dec. 2018."

A Sweetly Irresistible Sequel

"A question for readers: Isn’t it fun when you adore the first book in a new series, then you anticipate the next installment for months (hoping you won’t be disappointed) only to discover that book number two is even better than the first?! For me, Jody Hedlund’s “Orphan Train” series from Bethany House is the perfect example. “With You Always” was an excellent Christian Historical Novel, but “Together Forever” resonated with me even more. . . Perhaps because I could relate to the characters in big ways, and I loved the inclusion of the young orphans - in search of new families - who really added to the story with color, vivacity, and depth of emotion. “Together Forever” not only brings to life a fascinating piece of history in the “placing out” process of the Children’s Aid Society of 1850s New York, it is also filled with emotional dilemmas and characters who walk straight off the pages and into your heart. Few authors can make you laugh and cry within the span of a couple pages, but Jody manages this with ease. As a side note, a few scenes were, I felt, very slightly overdone for a Christian novel, and felt mildly inappropriate, but these were few in number and fairly mild in content. Overall, if you enjoy Christian fiction at it’s best but haven’t yet discovered the heartfelt, inspiring, and compelling stories of the three Neumann sisters (each book is about one sister) I highly encourage you to give the “Orphan Train” novels a try! Although they could easily be standalone stories, it is best to read them in order beginning with “With You Always”, followed by the new release of “Together Forever”, and concluding this coming December with “Searching for You”! “Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. ”"

A look at how homeless children in 1800s were given to other families

"The trauma and heart-hurting rawness of families torn apart, abandoned, suffering, and being given away to others is poignantly written into the pages of Jody Hedlund's Orphan Train series. She has fleshed out the story of peoples in the mid-1800's who because of poverty found themselves in conditions where there were thousands of children abandoned to the streets of New York. There are two main story lines or emphasis in Together Forever. The first would be the story of the children being taken from the streets of New York to be resettled with families in the mid-west. It is about them as individuals with fears, troubles, attitudes that make them either considered to be good or poor choices for those willing to take them in. The second story line in the book is a developing romance between the two main characters, Marianne Neumann and Andrew Brady. The children include many ages from toddlers to teens. When they stop at the towns that have families awaiting the opportunity to choose a child to take in, the children face a gamut of types of families. They are peered at, examined for ability to work, and scrutinized. Siblings are torn apart and some are deemed ""unwanted. "" It was a sad time and socially both a good happening and a terrible blot on humanity. Being in close proximity for many weeks as agents transporting these children aboard the Orphan Trains, the young adults, Marianne and Andrew, became drawn to one another and it soon their friedship blossomed into a sweet romance. Together Forever can easily be read as a stand alone story. However, other characters in the book were in book one in the series and the continuity is nice and makes for a more enjoyable read. The plight of the children in this series touches my heart as my own mother was raised in a orphanage because circumstances prevented her mother keeping her at home. Her situation was not as dire as that of the children consigned to the outbound Orphan Train, but it is a reminder that life can be hard and when hardship comes, the children suffer the most. I recommend Together Forever. DISCLOSURE: I receive a complimentary copy to facilitate this review. Opinions are my own and are freely given."

Courage to Love

"While Together Forever tells the story of the hardships of the children on the orphan trains (a term that became widely used after the fact) that took the orphaned, abandoned or homeless children from crowded Eastern cities to homes largely in the Midwest, it also tells the story of those agents who accompanied them. While today’s adoption process includes many safe guards to assure children are placed in an appropriate environment, agents accompanying the trains had to rely on brief first impressions and the opinion of those serving on local committees as to the suitability of these placements. Jody Hedlund successfully develops her readers’ empathy for all those involved. Through this story Hedlund explores the themes of having the courage it takes to love when getting hurt is a likely outcome and trusting God to restore one’s joy. She also explores the prison that can be created by one’s insecurities and the path to freedom. I truly appreciate stories, such as Together Forever, that tackle deep themes within an interesting story line. Marianne Neumann is very young to be a Children’s Aid Society agent but was able to secure the position by having her influential brother-in-law pull some strings. The position not only allows her some measure of financial independence, but it is critical in the search for her younger sister. Andrew Brady has come to be an agent after fleeing the memories of his life in the south. A former teacher, Andrew is well trained for supervising the children and youth on the trip west. Events along the way will tax both his skills and Marianne’s tender heart. I thank NetGalley and Bethany House for providing me with an advanced copy of Together Forever in exchange for my honest opinion. I received no monetary compensation. I will look forward to reading more books by this author in the future."
