Beautifully illustrated!

"Mary Beard’s Twelve Caesars isn’t a straight history of the emperors, but a fair look at how their images have been reinvented from ancient Rome to today. It shows how power, art, and propaganda intertwine."

TWELVE PORTRAITS THAT MADE A CIVILISATION

"Dame Winifred Mary Beard – academic, author and TV personality – specialises in Ancient Rome and is best known for introducing the ancient world to popular contemporary culture. Twelve Caesars is a richly illustrated book that explores how art associated with Julius Caesar and the first eleven Roman emperors have influenced European art and culture for over two millennia. It is based on Beard’s 2011 Mellon Lectures and blends classic history with cultural analysis. Beard explores the interplay between history, Renaissance art, and modern historical criticism, showcasing how these interacted across centuries. Beard notes that fact and fiction are often used liberally to create a desired narrative. Many portraits and sculptures were symbolic, rather than actual representations, as people value messages over facts. She also discusses how images communicate authority and thus the use of portraits on the obverse of coins. This book is accessible to both the generalist and specialist. Mary Beard takes us on a journey through time and cultures to gain insights into the projection of power. At times the narrative is uneven as it jumps between high-level discussion and deep detail. You may be disappointed if your expectation is to understand the lives and times of the emperors for it is more about the significance of their images and their usage to convey a certain narrative. Overall, the book is an informative read though patience is required at times."
