Poetic and captivating

"This was one of those books that gripped me tight and didn't let go. I loved everything about the story and the characters, Part of me is sad it's over."

Alyssa B. (4/5)

The duology to read!

"If you loved the first book, the second and final installment of this duology is even more powerful. The world of dark and light magic becomes deeper and more intense, raising the stakes in every possible way. The characters—both main and secondary—continue to grow, and their development feels even richer and more emotional. The gothic atmosphere is darker, the romance more compelling, and the suspense relentless until the very last page. This conclusion brings everything together beautifully, delivering a satisfying and unforgettable ending. A perfect finale to my favorite duology of 2025."

It’s rare the second book outshines the first one but…this book was a gift from the Spirit of the Woods herself!

"I will NEVER stop recommending this books series because it’s just that outstanding!! The journey for the card Deck 🃏 continues with the rebel gang spreading out embarking on their own journeys. Unique magic system, enduring family bonds and blossoming romance. ✨🃏🌳👑🗡️🃏✨🃏🌳👑🗡️🃏✨ With Elspeth trapped in her mind for most of this book I was not expecting much romance in this one but…omg…Elm coming in hotttt out of the left field!! Elm has a major story arc in this book and his romance was so adorably heartbreaking I cried (happy & sad tears!) 💕 LONG LIVE ROMANTASY!! We didn’t get as much Rayvn & Elspeth content as I would have liked. Did I cry every time they spoke…yes. Elspeth is such an incredibly strong fmc and even though she was locked away in her mind her POVs were incredibly interesting 🗡️✨ romance in this duology is so REAL both painfully heartbreaking & adorably endearing! The multiple POVs were chef’s kiss with every chapter ending on a cliffhanger/secret. Well written fantasy story of riddles, centuries-long secrets and strong bonds that make it all worth it. The book is definitely written with the “just one more chapter” cursed because I really consumed it in a single day!"

Soft N. (5/5)

"This duology was one of my absolute favourites this year. It is gripping and gothic and romantic all at once. When the special edition came out I just knew I had to get it !"

Rachel Gillig’s new biggest fan

"This book is INCREDIBLE. I loved this series, and I’ve loved all of her book. The printing of this book was beautiful, it was comfortable in my hand, and had big, easy to read text. LOVE LOVE LOVE"

Sam D. (5/5)

Great writing and love the special edition sprayed edges

"Fantastic conclusion to book 1. Absolutely love this series"

Gina H. (5/5)

Great way to round out a duology

"The second installment in the shepherd king duology is a drastic improvement from the first book, one dark window (which i thought was quite good too, though a little repetitive and not as nuanced as this one). This book makes the duology in my opinion. The first book is a great intro, and this book rounds out the story beautifully. Would recommend this to many fantasy readers"

Spud (5/5)

Great book for the fall

"Gothic, moody and beautifully written. It’s not all dark, comedic dialogue is peppered throughout."

Kirsty (4/5)

Dark and fun

"The ending to one of my favourite stories! Rachel really knows how to write a moody atmospheric book, with amazing characters and unique magic systems!"
