This excellent genealogy identifies well over five thousand individuals in the male line through eighteen generations in England and the United States. The family here studied is the Goode family of Virginia, introduced to America prior to 1660 by the immigrant John Goode. John was born in the vicinity of Cornwall, England, between 1620 and 1630. Whitby refers to the plantation that John established in Virginia, a corruption of the spelling of his English birthplace, Whitley. A wealth of data has been included on the history of the Goodes in England, greatly enhancing the value of the text. Several items are worthy of special notice: a facsimile reprint of the will of John Goode; an "Army Roll," listing family members who rendered service in Bacon's Indian War, Braddock's Expedition, the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Florida Indian War, the Mexican War and the Civil War (both Union and Confederate troops); three appendices-"The Family in England, with notices of American offshoots not of the Whitby stock," "Some Ancestral Families," and "Addenda et Corrigenda;" a key listing principal works of reference; and a full name index, cross-referenced with the aforementioned list of references. Numerous pedigree charts are included.
