“Gina Buonaguro has cracked open the secret lives of nuns living behind stone walls in glorious, oppressive sixteenth-century Venice. Written with colourful conversation and finely researched details of a city threatened by war and floods (even then), the novel shows the bravery of women who dared to fight for the right to free their hearts and their minds.” - Lisa Rochon, bestselling author of Tuscan Daughter
“A gripping, textured, meticulously researched tale of women’s lives in the watery world of early sixteenth-century Venice, a place of beauty but also rigid social stratification. . . . We encounter a vivid array of women from various walks of life who struggle for survival, agency, and love, and who often risk everything to break out of society’s constraints and expectations that define them. Compelling, heart-wrenching. Unputdownable.” - Jeanette Lynes, bestselling author of The Apothecary's Garden
“A rich, intricately researched story of two sisters’ loves, losses, and courage, cast against the vividly drawn backdrop of sixteenth-century Venice. I flew through every page!” - Rebecca Netley, author of The Whistling

Reviews

Unputdownable. A woman’s view from a nunnery, where women were discarded. Mind boggling.

"Rare insight into the religious life 1509 in Venice."

Virgins of Venice was an appropriate tile for this book.

"Found this book a little slow to start but I liked the story line."

History of Venice and women

"While I hope for more history in the midst of this historical fiction it was an interesting read"

Vivid and compelling!

"I felt like I knew these women, the characters in The Virigins of Venice. Even though the novel is set long ago in a different culture. And I felt like I was in 16th century Venice. Incredible attention to detail gut-churning plot, sympathetic characters (and a few nasty ones). Loved this book!"

A Peak into the Lives of 16th Century Women in Venice

"I really enjoyed this book being a fan of historical fiction. I learnt a lot about early 16th century life in Venice. It put me in mind of the phrase, “Get thee to a nunnery” which were religious sequestered establishments that have loose connections to our present day convents. The class system was very strict and intermingling of the classes had grave consequences. I was captivated by the characters in the story and was entertained while being educated."

A great informative yet light read

"A sales person recommended this historical fiction and I bought it without knowing anything about it. I was very pleasantly surprised; as soon as I opened the book, I could not put it down. An easy, imformative read, exacy what I hoped for. It painted a grim picture of what it would have been like to be a woman in Venice in the 1500’s, at a time of political opression of women and the patriarchal oligarchy."

The Virgins of Venice: A Novel

"I did enjoy this book's insight into the ""way of life"" in 16th century Venice; I also loved the fact that is was written by a Canadian author. I felt the characters were well-developed and the pacing of the story was good. I did, however, find the end of the book left me a bit wanting; two very strong characters throughout the story finished much weaker than I expected, leaving me with the feeling it was rushed and incomplete."

Engaging Historical Fiction

"What an engaging trip into the past of the lives of upper-class women in 16th century Venice! Historically interesting (I learned a lot about the hierarchy of Venetian society) and captivating, I found myself caught up in Justina's world and rooting for her. The level of research into this novel is apparent which makes the story all the more compelling. I bought this book just before my Christmas break and I'm glad I did as I was completely engrossed in the story. Luckily I didn't have to worry about shirking my other responsibilities but rather dive deep into Gina's story world. Look forward to where she takes us in her next novel!"

Historical Fiction Gem

"Historical fiction is my favourite genre and this book is a gem. The book is nicely written and hard to put down. Historically accurate, the author has painted a vivid picture of the era."

Proud To Be A Woman Of Today

"This is one of the best and most memorable books I have ever read. fast paced, heartbreaking, sorrowful and unputdownable. Set in 16th Century Venice the story shows how the male gender held power over their women who clearly had no say in their lives. They were used as a means to improve a man,s status and for financial gain in society, being moved much like chess pieces for the man,s benefit only. The female characters bond together helping each other with strength, courage and hope in spite of adversity in an effort to persevere on in life. Sometimes they would outwit the men but not often. How far women have progressed to present day times in the right to live the lives we choose with intelligence and pride. I can,t say enough about this fantastic read. Pass it on to your friends, daughters, mothers. Or better yet. . ,keep it on your bookshelf to re-read yet again at a later time."
