Larry Jacobsen came to Canada from Denmark as a baby in 1929. He spent his first eight years on farm a mile north of Edgewater, BC in the East Kootenay's not far from Radium Hot Springs. He remembers sailing his boat (a half "hollowed-out vegetable marrow" with a twig stuck in it for a mast) down the flume at the edge of the farmyard. His father worked in relief construction camps during the summers building highways while his mother and two older sisters attended the animals and the vegetable garden. The family moved to the Prairie in 1937 and bought a quarter section of irrigated land in the Brooks Alberta country where Larry got his feet wet learning the irrigation business and mixed farming.

After leaving home, and working briefly in logging (before power saws) and a sawmill, he spent 13 years as a hard-rock underground miner. He followed that up with construction work — eventually in management — followed by work as an independent consultant having first gone to night school at Simon Fraser University to learn business administration. His last years of work were spent in the energy industry and pipeline construction. At age 77 he finally became a full-time retiree from paying work. Larry began non-business writing when he was in his mid-60s and Walhachin: Birth of a Legend is his fifth book.
