Strangely disorienting story

"It took me about 50 or so pages to get used to the writing and feel of this book, for it's the weirdest I've ever read. At first, it bothered me how much our main characters seemed to be repeating themselves and how they were behaving. . . but it does make sense given the trauma they went through and the fact that we're seeing the world through Mary's perspective. It was very disorienting at first but once I got over that hump I thoroughly enjoyed the story. By the end, it left me with unanswered questions. I love stories that stick with you, that make you want to go down rabbit holes of people's theories. No doubt I'll enjoy this story even more on a reread. I'd highly recommend reading this if you're into strange disorienting stories."

Lovely surprise

"I picked up this book without really knowing what it’s about and have heard nothing of it from others. While it’s a bit challenging to read due to how old the book is, I found myself analyzing the story and characters long after I finished reading. I’d love to re-read it again sometime soon. Plus the gothic cover suits the themes perfectly."

Shirley Jackson was born in California in 1916. When her short story, 'The Lottery', was first published in the New Yorker in 1948, readers were so horrified they sent her hate mail; it has since become one of the most iconic American stories of all time. Her first novel, The Road Through the Wall, was published in the same year and was followed by Hangsaman, The Bird's Nest, The Sundial, The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle, widely seen as her masterpiece. In addition to her dark, brilliant novels, she wrote lightly fictionalized magazine pieces about family life with her four children and her husband, the critic Stanley Edgar Hyman. Shirley Jackson died in 1965.
