A Modern Classic

"One of my favourite modern novels. Exciting, engaging, and thought provoking. An array of interesting characters and plot points. If you love Wizard of Oz you’ll love this!"

Sunfrog76 (5/5)

Unexpectedly Gritty

"A realist's reinvention of the classic 'good triumphs over evil' story of The Wizard of Oz. This imaginative and gritty story deals with politics, racism, sexuality, and the overall human condition in a way that you would never expect based on the musical and movie adaptations. I enjoyed the realist edge that it has, where things aren’t necessarily always satisfying because that’s just how it goes in real life sometimes."

Aly17 (4/5)

So happy I got this edition

"Love that the original cover art is still available for purchase! :)"

Dalton (5/5)

Wickedly boring.

"Very slow reading, despite enjoying Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister this book was a struggle."

Kerry (2/5)

A Must-Read!

"This book is so unique and exciting to read! It really goes into the story behind 'The Wizard of Oz' and explains how the Wicked Witch of the West really got her name and became who she was. A misunderstanding? I think so! Loved that this book went into the politics of Oz as well! #PlumReview"

Lindsay (4/5)

Wizard of oz with a dark twist

"I loved this book. It's definitely not your child's fairytale. In the book, the original story is propoganda and the wizard is a tyrannical dictator. The book is surprisingly relevant to current events, as the wizard takes rights away from speaking animals. They are akin to an underclass and the ""wicked"" witch--from an affluent family herself and educated--is actually a civil rights advocate for the oppressed. It's a great twist on a classic tale, made almost realistically believable despite the talking animals and magic"

Matt (5/5)

Wonderfull!

"Great Book! I have a problem with book which the evil characters are evil without any reason, but this book show exactly the dificult life of the wicked witch and how she became wicked. I actually preffer her character over dorotys. Amazin book!"

Renata (4/5)

Fantastic

"Loved this book can't say that enough really enjoyed the misperception of the Wizard of Oz. I wish there was a sequel with the Wicked witch and Glinda together."

Marie (5/5)

Creative, Wonderful Story

"This book is a clever look at the classic wizard of oz tale. The context and backstory are rich and complex, and the entire story is a joy to read. I would definitely recommend this book."

Blossombend (5/5)

I absolutely LOVED it!

"What a fun twist on a well known tale!"

"An outstanding work of imagination." - USA Today
“I knew that Gregory Maguire had come up with a genius idea the moment I heard about Wicked. It’s a book that has changed a lot of lives, including mine.” - Stephen Schwartz, composer and lyricist of Wicked: The Musical
"Gregory gets the complications and uniqueness of women very well." - Kristen Chenoweth
"Maguire did something truly remarkable with this novel, in managing to inhabit, enlarge, deepen and find new dimensions in a world that had been invented by another writer, and in doing so make something entirely new. It’s an astonishing achievement." - Philip Pullman
“At the heart of this remarkable, unforgettable novel is a wildly original premise—one that only a writer with Gregory Maguire’s intellect and daring could have dreamed up: that the Wicked Witch of the West was a real woman, with an actual name, and her own story to tell. It was radical when Gregory first wrote it, and remains radical. It has the power to reshape one’s view of the world.” - Winnie Holzman, co-writer of Wicked: The Musical
“Long before there was any thought of a musical, I read Wicked. I felt a quiet joy that sisterhood had made its way to the Yellow Brick Road. What happens when a witch, green or otherwise, gets to tell her own story instead of being vilified and misrepresented by dominant cultural authority? We witches know how that turns out!” - Holly Near
“Listen up, Munchkins. Stop your singing, stop the dancing. The Wicked Witch is no longer dead. But not to worry. Gregory Maguire’s shrewdly imagined and beautifully written first novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, not only revives her but re-envisions and redeems her for our times.” - Newsday

Gregory Maguire is the bestselling author of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Lost, Mirror Mirror, and the Wicked Years, a series that includes Wicked, Son of a Witch, and A Lion Among Men.
