MARDA WOODBURY is Library Director at the Life Chiropractic College-West and a part time writer-researcher.
"This guide to information resources on adolescents is an annotated bibliography of nearly 700 citations, along with an appendix listing addresses and telephone numbers for 225 youth-related clearinghouses and organizations. The guide also explains research strategies, characteristics of different types of information sources, and suggestions for using reference tools. The selective bibliography concentrates on resources about American and Candian youth and emphasizes authoritative sources that are widely available in libraries. This is an interdisciplinary work, listing sources dealing with topics as varied as religion, drugs, sports, and employment. [The author] has arranged the bibliography by format--e.g., dictionaries, bibliographies, directories, and periodicals... The guide has two indexes: an author, title, and organization index and a subject and format index. The bibliographic information in citations is complete. Prices are given, and a notation is made for out-of-print items. The annotations are more descriptive than evaluative. Sample entries from some abstracts and indexes are reproduced. The chapter on online databases provides annotations for vendors, including BRS, Dialog, and Wilsonline, and for bibliographic databases such as ERIC, Medline, and Mental Health Abstracts. The descriptions of the 61 databases include cost, years covered, and information about descriptors. A sample search result is reprinted for each database.... [The] guide will be useful in large reference collections and in professional collections in school library media centers, medical centers, and youth services organizations. This guide is valuable not only for its descriptive bibliography butespecially for its discussion of how to locate and apply a variety of resources."-Reference Books Bulletin
